The Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire has welcomed a move to have Stawell's Central Park put on Victoria's heritage register.

The park hosts the country's richest footrace, the Stawell Gift, and Heritage Victoria has recommended its inclusion on the register.

The listing will cover the number one grandstand and the council has applied to have the park's memorial gates added also.

Mayor Ray Hewitt says the listing will help council preserve the park's history.

"It does recognise the iconic nature of the Stawell Gift as a premier foot race in Australia, it's been going for well over 100 years," he said.

"Along with [that], there's the beautiful old grandstands, the magnificent gates and they're part of the history of the Stawell Gift, a part of Stawell history."
