Veteran sprinter Merlene Ottey's at 51 is still going
strong and has her eyes set on the World
Championships in Daegu this summer.

Slovenia’s super-vet Ottey not finished yet

Slovenia’s veteran sprinter Merlene Ottey confirmed that she has her sights on competing at an eighth Olympic Games next year, at the age of 52, and at also this summer’s World Championships.

The world 200m champion turned 51 last month and competed in the 4x100m relay at the European Team Championships First League in Izmir, in Turkey last weekend, although the Slovenian quartet were eventually disqualified for a faulty handover.

"If we qualify, I would be happy to be part of the Slovenian relay team in Daegu [at the World Championships in South Korea in August] and in London,” said Ottey.

“I think when the season will progress I will also be faster,” said Ottey who clocked 11.67 for the 100m at the age of 50. This year she has 12.07 to her name.

Ottey is the only athlete to have competed in seven Olympic Games, from 1980 to 2004, although she missed the last edition in Beijing and she has also competed in eight World Championships.

Last year, she became the oldest athlete to compete in the European Athletics Championships when she was part of the Slovenian 4x100m relay team in Barcelona.

At the time she said: “I’ll go on competing for as long as I can, as long as there are not four other [Slovenian] girls faster than me.”
