LANDMARK DAY FOR THOMSON AT CERES writes Shane Fenton.

A dry warm day brought out a good crowd for Saturday's Ceres Highland Games on the Bow Butts and they witnessed some excellent competition in the various events.
In the heavy events the day got off to a good start with David Dowson from Middlesborough setting a new ground record in the Shot Putt with a throw of 51' 6''. The Englishman also won the Ceres Stane, the rest of the disciplines however were dominated by Neil Elliot from Helensburgh with wins in both the 56lb weight for height and distance, Tossing the Caber for distance and traditional as well as the sheaf pitching. Elliot came out on top overall ahead of Dowson and Willie Falconer, adding an international flavour to the competitions was Rick Robertson from Texas.
On the track the 90 metre sprint title went to Borderer Bruce Scott, Earlston who held off the Fife challenge of Graham Lister, Kirkcaldy and Sean Harris,Crosshill breaking the tape in 9.66 seconds.
Willie Bates, Tullibody was the victor in the 200 metres handicap coming home ahead of Ewan Dyer, Pitreavie AC and David Edwards, Jedburgh.
Graeme Gibson DWF continued his good start to the season with a well timed run in the 800 metres handicap coming through from the backmark to break the tape in 1 minute 59.77 seconds.
There was also a good backmark performance in the 1600 metres from Colin Welsh from Kelso who timed his run to perfection to overhaul frontmarkers Barry Davie and George Hunter both from the Pitreavie club.
Saturday at Ceres was a landmark for Coaltown of Balgonie veteran athlete John Thomson, John began his Highland Games career at Ceres in the Boys Marathon back in 1969 and since then has won 11 races on the Bow Butts this was also his 125th win on the Highland Games circuit.
There was a female 1 - 2 - 3 in the Youth's 90 metres handicap with Caitlin Murphy pipping her Pitreavie AC team mate Zara Connelly with Emily Newlands from Jedburgh in third.
Connolly also had to settle for second place in the Youth's 200 metres where victory went to Lothian Running Club's Nicola Kellock in 24.55 seconds. Mhairi Henderson of Jedburgh was third.
In the Youth's 800 metres Connor Morris continued his good start to the season with another good run breaking the tape in 2 minutes 25.28 seconds.
In the cycling events Craig Hardie, Dalgety Bay made his seasonal debut a winning one with victory in the 800 metres handicap, he followed that up with a win in the 1600 metres, he was just pipped for a treble in the 3000 metres when he was beaten by half a wheel from Hans Forshaug from Glasgow.
The final event the 5000 metres which is 25 laps of the tight 200 metre circuit at Ceres saw victory go to Paul Gallagher, Kirkcaldy.
