Showers fail to dampen Leonora spirit

By ANNE SKINNER,
The West Australian
June 6, 2011,

It was cold, wet and windy, but that did not stop almost 2000 people converging on Leonora for the town's eighth Golden Gift weekend.

It was two days of racing - for four-legged, two-legged and wheeled participants - as well as community events, children's activities, a street market and a country music concert.

Visitors came from everywhere. A big contingent drove from Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Northern Goldfields.

More than 20 people travelled 1000km from Pinjarra on what has become an annual outing for several family groups - and one couple even came from Sydney.

"We love country races and the atmosphere in Leonora," Pinjarra resident Laurie Preston said at the Leonora Race Club on Saturday afternoon, where Kalgoorlie-Boulder jockey Misty Bazeley won four of the five races.

"When you see what a small community can do, it is fantastic to watch it."

Leonora shire president Jeff Carter said the Golden Gift surpassed last year's event, despite Saturday night's 22mm downpour which flooded roads around the town.

"No one has worried about the weather and everyone likes the rain anyway," Mr Carter said.

Commonwealth Games medallist Mark Fountain beat a top-quality field and difficult conditions to claim the Golden Gift men's elite race yesterday.

The experienced 29-year-old ran the mile in 3min. 54.9sec. He won $6000 and a gold nugget worth $1000 - as did women's mile winner Kaila McKnight, from Melbourne, who finished in 4:31.7.

Victorian rider Steele von Hoff, 23, triumphed in the Goldfields Cyclassic yesterday thanks to a late sprint.
