Japan beckons for van Veenendaal
Toowoomba Chronicle
5th May 2011

TOOWOOMBA sprinter Charlotte van Veenendaal leaves tomorrow for her first ever international athletics meet in Kawasaki, Japan.

Van Veenendaal and her team-mates in the 4x100m Australian relay team are competing at the international Kawasaki Grand Prix on Sunday.

The internationally sanctioned meet is another chance for the relay team to crack the 44-second A qualifying time for the IAAF World Championships in South Korea in August.

The newly married Van Veenendaal, has postponed her honeymoon as she chases her dream of qualifying for the world championships.

The Australian team, also including Sally Pearson, Mel Breen and Laura Whaler, competes against international teams from Asia and Europe in Kawasaki and Van Veenendaal’s coach Gerrard Keating believes the standard of competition will bring out the best in them.

“Realistically the girls have been winning their races by 50m... there’s no competitiveness and you really need that,” Keating said.

The relay team narrowly missed the qualifying mark by two hundredths of a second in their last run together in March.
