Stawell Gift Media Release
Tuesday, 15 March 2011

From Africa to Stawell, elite distance contingent set to compete at Central Park.

For the first-time in the history of the event, an elite group of Kenyan runners will make the journey from Africa to Central Park this Easter to contest the distance events at the 2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift.

Their appearance will significantly bolster the fields set to compete in events from 550m to 3200m including the Retravision Herb Hedemann Invitation Mile, where the African contingent will vie for a share of the $120,000 in prize money up for grabs throughout the Australia Post Stawell Gift carnival.

Their appearance is courtesy of a new sponsorship by electrical retailer Retravision, who have jumped onboard to sponsor the elite Retravision Herb Hedemann Invitation Mile on Easter Tuesday.

The talented four-member Kenyan contingent includes world junior 1500m champion Remmy Limo Ndiwa, Collins Cheboi, Job Koech Kinyor and Margaret Wangari Muriuki who placed sixth at the 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

To add further spice, Muriuki will also compete in the men’s distance races in an intriguing battle of the sexes.

“The Africans are renowned for putting on an exciting show and I’m sure the distance fraternity will come out in droves to watch the formidable four in action this Easter,“ said Australia Post Stawell Gift promoter David Culbert.

“The Herb Hedemann Invitation Mile has always been a highlight on Final’s Day with Australia’s best middle distance runners battling for supremacy at Central Park. And now with the injection of top quality international runners from Africa, it will be a great opportunity for our local runners to take on some of the best in the world.”

A household name in Australia, Retravision have stores right across the nation, including Stawell Retravision who regularly support events, clubs and organisations throughout the local Wimmera community.

“As one of the leading electrical retail stores in Australia with a strong presence in regional areas, Retravision is delighted to be associated with the Australia Post Stawell Gift in 2011,” said Biag Capasso, Retravision Marketing and Merchandising Manager.

“Retravision are pleased to support the world-class African runners who will journey to Stawell to race against our own talented distance runners.
“We are proud to continue to support local communities around the country.”

The 2011 Australia Post Stawell Gift carnival will be staged over the Anzac Day long weekend this Easter from Friday, 22 April to Tuesday, 26 April, 2011.
The carnival kicks off with the Calcutta on Friday night and is followed by four days of thrilling racing, including the Driscoll McIllree and Dickinson Ladies Day and Stawell Regional Health Family Day, all culminating in the 130th running of the Australia Post Stawell Gift on Easter Tuesday.

For those still looking for accommodation at Easter, check out Stawell Central, a new and exciting accommodation precinct located just minutes from Central Park. Grab your family and friends and make it a huge long weekend of athletics, horse racing and social activities whilst revelling in a fantastic holiday atmosphere.
