This could prove to be a great weekend for Pro Running. Two big gift races and some quality entries. St Albans usually put on a great spectacle with many sitting behind the bar watching the athletes. Last season Joel Bee provided some excitement. I do not think that Hunt will be on scratch. Who do you like?

Hunt ran 12.16 off 6.50m in Bay Sheffield semi final. This gives him an rpm of .107136 ie : (12.16 / 113.5m). In other words the run was worthy of 10.71 electric on grass.
He has never run in Vic and therefore didn't have a mark in Vic before running that performance.
He is therefore handicapped on exposed form to 12.45 on his first run in Vic like all entrants in Vic including all Vics. The only way to improve the mark from there is to run and get lifts as per the policy or win a bonus lift race. No one is handicapped on maths at the beginning to ceiling time being 12.25sec. It is a ceiling point not a handicap target for the handicapper.

Based on the rating of .1071. That would therefore give him a mark of 3.75m in Victoria. Ie (.1071 x 116.25m = 12.45). (120m - 116.25m = 3.75m).

If he were to win St Albans he would receive a 0.75m lift provided he doesn't run a time during that race that would make that lift put him beyond ceiling. At this stage a 0.75m lift would not put him above ceiling because 3.75m would have him calculated at 12.45. The extra bonus 0.75 would put him at 12.38 off 4.50m based on the same rating if he were lucky enough to win St Albans.

Can't argue with that logic. Although being an OGA athlete he could have a little less if they wanted to. It would appear that the 3.75m would be the maximum he can expect to receive.

The one thing to consider though is that SA times are what we use as raw times
Handicaps are taken off adjusted times
So if there was a 2.0 tailwind on that run, his time would be adjusted up 0.1 and he could therefore have 1 metre more than stated above etc.
I just hope SA use a wind gauge otherwise the poor guy is stuck on that mark or below. And there were definitely tailwinds

Given the opportunity to win St Albans or Castlemaine this weekend off the same mark I would take Castlemaine. Slightly less of a pull. This weekend could see one win go to Baird and one interstate. Let's take a look.

Luke Houlihan 5m - 19% - Houlihan has two speeds when it comes to running. One where he lets the brake off and one where he runs comfortably behind someone else. He is a nice looking runner when he is going full tilt. I would like to see him go close here but feel that a podium is his best results.

Sam Baird 6.5m - 19% - Bairs showed last week that he is close and if it were a mens and womens gift we would not be talking about him here. I feel that he will win this weekend but may have a bigger go at Castlemaine. Time will tell.

Tim Eschebach 6.5m - 11% - Eschebach is another very handy runner and he is right in the mix for a Stawell final especially if he can take a bonus. His training squad is primed for the big one. but who is their pea?

Yani Spanos not enough / Luke Mitchell 11m - 9% - Spanos is lucky to be attached to Mitchell as all of the votes are surely for the later. Mitchell is looking quite good. You dont make a Maryborough final if you are not moving well. And why not when he got the mark through a system and improved as he developed. He is now at the right age to be challenging of a lesser mark. He seems a nice enough kid and will likely final. I am not sure how much more improvement he has but when he decides to win a gift he will win more than one.

A couple of others got multiple votes and I am sure you will agree that if Illet and Kwenin make the final as well it will be a great spectacle.

Good luck

Tim, there were no tail winds. There were slight headwinds evident by the flags all day. There was also sodden grass from periodic rain.
These factors made the runs at Bay even more impressive!
Hunt and Sasha were some of the most impressive gift placegetters in recent years.

No worries. Was just stating that IF there were tailwinds the times in Victoria used for handicapping would take those into account under the current guidelines Smile Not the “raw times”
