The Women's gift is now one of the most sought after races for our female athletes. It always produced a good final but now it is seen as one of the very best opportunities for females to let the handbrake off. I would expect another quality final and have my eye on a few fillies for a punt. Who do you like?

absolutely sick of seeing 15 year old girls with ridiculously easy marks. When are the handicappers going to learn that 15 year old girls are just on growth hormones and light and fast and improve exponentially during the season and every season for a couple of years. FFS get your handicapping on point and if you can't handicap a 15year old, don't allow them to enter. No point travelling interstate for this event, hope the women enjoy the Barossa and McLaren Vales for a drink, coz at least they are of a proper age to have a wine and to compete fairly on equal terms with other women.
thats my 2 cents

You do realise she won from the Red? That would make her the back marker in case you aren't aware outtopasture Smile Not sure if your post was a piss take or serious Shocked

Not to mention she has already won smaller races and gone back in mark from memory

14.8 at Brighton off 6.5m and couldn’t make a semi. Thrown a one metre bone and the rest is history. I can see how Outtopasture could be a little peeved travelling over with a few runners. Probably still wins off 6.5m.

From what I have read about this girl is that she won multiple sashes across both the SAAL & the VAL last season & has been running with the league for 3 or 4 years. She was back 1 metre from her Bay mark from last year where she was run out in the semis.

Thought it was a pretty nice run to be honest & if she didn't win as the back marker off 7.5m in red yesterday a 16 yr old would have won off 11.5m!! I know what I would prefer!

i have to agree with outpasture Famer is not a back marker a Back marker starts way back . A 15 year old girl starting of 7.5 in Red please handicappers get it right .She had a cracking carnival and well deserved wins .But to give her an easy mark in the 120 , same as Stawells previous hiccups Times must change

@gofast what is she meant to do? Lose on purpose to make you hobnobs happy? How about this for an idea, done get bitter, get better! Farmer has only gone back in her handicap so I don’t see how it ‘can be a rediculous handicap’

The line up in the Bookies tent after the two finals resembled a Congo line with people having to line well out of the tent to collect.
Many punters collected off the Mens Final by simply going for a bit more value away from the favourite and by the performances of Zoya during the Carnival.Bad luck for the South Aussie , just beaten by a one out of the box.
Money for the Womans winner came all through the three days and bets were being laid on day one when the bookies opened up.One eager punter had $50 eachway @ $18 so would have been all smiles for sure. That bet would have been placed within moments of the bookies opening so Im guessing they thought the $18 was well and truly overs .
Bookies werent very happy when they left , and my guess is that they left with lighter bags.

Bookies were openly pissed off with womens race.
Talk of not coming back next year.
Guessing there will be a stewards inquiry.
Atkins/Sheffield camp will be looking in with interest.

If we are talking about handicaps for underage athletes then surely Sasha Zhoya needs to be in the discussion. Don’t get me wrong, having him run over the two days brought some serious X factor and made the carnival very exciting but how does the handicapper determine that he should be on 5m?
A 15 year old has a PB on track of 10.75 over the 100m
For comparison we have Sanderson-Milera who is off 3.5m (granted was in the final and ran second last year) has a seasons best PB of 10.78? It seems to me that the interstate especially WA runners are coming over and getting better handicaps then those of the SA who compete all season. This can be shown by the open gift final featuring 1 SA runner.

Did you ever think the bookmakers who open the odds did not con the other bookmakers on betting those odds? lol

The girl won fair and square.

Fair & square, oh please. Theres only 1 bookie and relies on SAAL to provide odds and form

Brighton 17-12, 11 days before Bay.
120m Women - Heat: 6
Position Name Colour Mark Time
1 Demi Axford Pink 16.00m 14.674
2 Hayley Orman Blue 10.00m 14.762
3 Lakara Stallan White 9.00m 14.801
4 Jessica Schaedel Green 12.00m 14.847
5 Molly Farmer Red 6.50m 14.86
6 Zoe Smith Yellow 11.00m 15.074
7 Claire Brooke Black 14.00m 15.53

5th in heat Brighton.
Stewards entitled to ask questions.
If Molly scratched from Brighton she would not have opened at 18-1. more like 8-1.

What's your point racingmania? Who is your issue with? Were you not part of the 11% of this poll that tipped her to win? From what I have seen of her racing over the last few years she has well & truly exposed herself. She is a serious talent!

Well if I was a bookmaker I would not let on someone tell me what odds I should post for any race. And bookmakers are happy to take people’s money when they lose they should get a new job they cannot take it when punters win

Correct. She was equal 5th favourite at $12 on the Bay Sheff Facebook page so why the bookies chose to open her at 18's is a question for them.

If you knew the girl was going well enough to run a sub 13.60 I reckon even $12 would be as Bruce would say very very very delicious.

Yes unfortunately in the VAL that would have been a huge fine and controversy given the Talia Martin precedent...but thanks to reasonable stewarding and governance in SAAL where they consider the athletes PB's and what runners have done in the past and not single out and make judgements on one poor performance.

For it is the athletes PB that handicaps are based on and not the poor performances and if bookmakers want to bet against an athlete running their PB or better again ….especially at Molly’s age then that is poor risk assessment.

Molly's win was fantastic and will inspire many junior's in SA.

And for the record when the backmarker in the race is of 2.75m and there are only 9 athletes handicapped behind you 7.5m is a backmark....but this is handicapped pro-running and you take the mark you are given and do your best, the most talented in the field don't always win and that is what pro-running is all about. However if you are talented you will some day have your day in the sun.

If you prepare well and have a reasonable handicap for your ability you have a chance to win in our sport… it caters for all abilities and not just the elite.

Before we begin condeming anyone , times at Brighton were all on the slow side compared to the Bay.
So the best way to work out if there was any thing untoward and theres no wind readings lets access how Farmers form holds up against Ormans.

FINAL PRE BAY...ORMAN, 10M  time 14.394
                      FARMER  6.50M time 14.608

BRIGHTON HEAT.. ORMAN 10M time 14.762
                       FARMER 6.50M time 14.860

BAY SHEFF     ORMAN  10.50M time  ?
                  FARMER  7.50M  time ?

So until times for the Womans Gift come out lets not beat drums to much. The fact that these two girls ran against each other in the final at the PREBAY and Heat at Brighton will highlight if theres anything to complain about.Farmer was better off at the Bay by .5M So you would expect for her times to improve slightly more than Ormans

How many runs did Farmer have at Pre Bay? Did she final in anything else? Podium in anything?

Farmer had 8 runs at Pre Bay, made the Podium in the Women's 70 & ran the Women's gift Final shortly after running the 18's gift Final so not surprised her final time wasn't as sharp.

Here's one for you though whispers considering you're a stats man. I looked back through some results myself as I have missed a few meets this year & came up with an even more interesting comparison. No surprise to a lot of people Farmer won the Bay. She has run in 12 Finals this year, won 6 sashes last year as well as the leagues most outstanding Female U18's award.

Bigger surprise for mine was the girl that ran 2nd in the Women's Bay final!!!!!!!!??????????

OK. She is still only 15 so happy to accept she had one bad run at Brighton and nothing sinister about it.
I don't blame her. her coach should have known better to let her run when under duress.
Exciting talent, hopefully we see her out at amos now.

No her coach was right in getting her to run and support the sport we need athletes like Molly running each week lets not do what the VAL does, we want everyone running as often as they can ...it is up to the hamdcapper to assess all performances and allocate hamdicaps according to best performances.
