Maryborough host one of the oldest professional foot races in Australia. Sitting in the stands provides you with ample vision of the many events on offer. The penny farthing races may be a thing of the past but the quality of athlete required to win the gift is always present. The list of winners is excellent and I expect this year to add to that impressive list. Who do you like?

Maryborough has a history like none other. I believe it may be the oldest professional footrace in Australia. Looking back through the winners list you have to be a quality athlete to win. One thing is for certain, we will see a Stawell finalist or two in the final tomorrow as this is a great guide for those chasing the ultimate prize. After the results from Bay I wonder if there will be some training partners of a more fancied athlete having a dip at the line. A small field though for a big event. Let's take a look at the poll leaders.

Carl Morehouse 6.5m – 15% - Carl is a very likeable athlete. He has won multiple gifts and always had the potential to win big. Just when he looks like he will be cherry ripe he gets injured. Off 6.5m he has a choice to make. Win Maryborough and take one of the classics or miss and throw his hat in the ring for another shot at a final at Stawell.

Dion Paull 9.75m – 10% - Good voting again for Dion. I think he makes the final if he runs, what I do not think will happen is a win. I can see him on the limit at Stawell this year and pushing for a final. Win or lose he will take a small pull for the final and then be able to win early next season and put himself in the window for back to back finals. He could take a win this season but it is probably not going to be until later this season.

Matthew Harvey 10.5m – 15% - Harvey ‘Wallbanger’ has got his mark back to one that gives him every opportunity to win tomorrow. He won Bendigo a few years back now off a similar mark and has run good times from around 10m so should be in the mix. A win at Maryborough or Ballarat this season would look great on the resume for ‘Wallbanger’.

Tim Rosen 12m / Darren Whittaker 12m – 13% - The votes here could be for either athlete as both have shown that they can be dangerous off the limit. Rosen comes back a little to compete in some of the bigger races. I think that he may find the going too tough to win here but he may be considered a chance for the final. I know that many of us share the same thoughts about Whittaker. He has been knocking on the door of a big win for a few years and probably needs to win sooner rather than later. If he can get away quickly he may just put enough pressure on the field to make them tighten up. After the comeback he has made I would love to see him get the big win he deserves.

Good luck
