I will try a poll for the ladies again. There are some very good athletes entered. I do not know what the thought process is anymore with the ladies after the increase in prize money for Stawell in recent years. This could be a good chance for some to chase hard and watch those in front of them get the chocolates. Who do we like?

42 votes is not too bad for a poll. Fairly good entries for this one. Sometimes it is what you do not see in racing that is the most obvious and I think we may find ourselves with one of these races tomorrow. What is the old Mex on about? Watch who does not win as Northcote is a great guide for some of the big women races later in the year.

Jessica Payne 2.5m - 9% - 'Feel the' Payne has emerged as one of our best female athletes. Now running off tight marks and still putting pressure on all the way to the line. How good can she be? Not sure, but I did not have her picked a few years back to be this competitive from the back marks. Don't think this is on her radar, may final but will not take the win.

Taylah Perry 4.75m - 9% - 'Pint sized' Perry looked a winner last season before the Stawell final. I wonder if now that she has gone close to winning Stawell she will continue to focus on it like Chris Touhy did all those years ago or whether she will set her sights on something like The Bay Sheffield? Did she come back just too far to challenge for Stawell again this year or has Shane found a way to improve his athletes again? I do not see her winning here. I like her going for Bay.

Pamela Austin 9.75m - 9% - Pamela is going very well and should feature in the final. She is looking fit and I think that she will be thereabouts for most of the season. She has a handy mark and I am not sure if she is thinking that a win will take some pressure off later in the season or if she is trying to sit nicely on the limit. One thing is for sure, if she does not win tomorrow she will be in all my write-ups until she does. Big chance of a big win somewhere this season.

Jody Richards 11.75m - 24% - Clearly the poll favourite and why not. She is moving very well and should be standing atop the podium tomorrow. What has she got to lose? A small pull for a win and still a chance at sitting close to the limit for some of the bigger races. Is she a guide for her sister?

Anne Fiedler 14.25m / Michelle Young 14.5m - 11% - Fiedler showed that she still has some class winning the Masters 300m at Stawell. Some may have been surprised at this win but they may not have been around to see her races as a quality back marker with a strong determination to fight all the way to the line. I am not sure that she has her sprinting legs back yet but when she does will win. Young made many finals last year and came up short (no pun intended). She may be better suited to this shorter race (pun intended that time) and will feature in the final if she is close to the same shape as last year.

Good luck

I can’t believe Anna Pasquali didn’t get a vote. Just missed the Stawell final by a whisker. Should get the chocolates here
