Luke Traynor & Tony Daffurn in tip top form at Oban

SHANE FENTON reports from MOSSFIELD PARK,OBAN

Luke Traynor,Giffnock North and Tony Daffurn, Coatbridge were the athletes in form at the Lorne Games in Oban. Despite a few heavy showers in the morning Mossfield Park was in excellent condition.

Luke Traynor made his seasonal debut on the Games circuit following his return from America where earlier this month he recorded a 29.10, 10,000 metres in Eugene. The Giffnock North athlete landed a treble, coming from the backmark in all of the races. In the 800 he came through the field from the 30mts mark to stop the watch at 1:57.74 to win from Donald Bradley,Inverness[100M] and Willie Perry,Bath AC[70M].

Giving away big starts in the 1600 mts he once again produced an impressive run from the 50mts mark to win in 4m 20s from Ali McLeod Shettleston[110], the latter had previously won the Hill Race in a new record time.Donald Bradley[200] was third with Willie Bates,Tullibody fourth.[200]

The 400 mts produced one of the best finishes of the day with Traynor[25m] collaring Ewan Bradley,Inverness[36m] on the tape with Martin Barr,East Kilbride[ in third.Ewan Bradley contested this event off the back of an exhausting three days, on Friday evening he won the £1000 prize with victory in the 800m handicap at the City of Edinburgh meeting , this was followed by a full day of running and jumping at Drumtochty Games on Saturday.

Tony Daffurn had an exceptional two days, his four timer at Drumtochty was followed up by another 4 wins at Lorne. He kicked off at Lorne with victory in the Open 90 mts handicap final where he edged out Ben Coates,Oban and Martin Barr,East Kilbride, the three other runners who made the final were Calum Innes,VP Glasgow, David Allan,Balloch and Ewan Bradley,Inverness.

Daffurn then went on to win all three jumps events where judge Bill McCallum reported a high standard of competition. In the Triple Jump, only 2 inches seperated Tony and Aidan Quinn,Shettleston, the duo are currently two of the leading triple jumpers in the SA rankings.

It was the same 1 – 2 in the Long Jump with Tony winning with a jump of 21' 1''. The four timer was landed in the High Jump with a leap of 1.70m.

There was a thrilling finish to the 200 metres handicap with David Allan[35] snatching the win on the line from Martin Barr[33] and Calum Innes[31]

There was a keenly contested heavy events contest between Lorne Colthart,Lukasz Wenta,Kyle Randalls and local Muro Mathieson.Lukasz won four events, the 16lb and 22lb shot putts, 28lb weight for distance and caber. Lorne won the 56lb for distance, 16lb hammer with Kyle successful in the 22lb hammer and first equal with Lukasz in the 56lb over the bar.
