MARKINCH 2017 REPORT AND RESULTS by SHANE FENTON

The forecast showers stayed away and the John Dixon Park was bathed in warm sunshine as the Markinch Highland Games enjoyed another successful day. Crowds came from far and wide with this year a record number of overseas visitors in attendance including Bob Fenwick the Mayor of Markinch in Canada. Chieftain for the second successive year was well known local piper Sandy Imrie.
Markinch stages the oldest pipe contest in the country with this year 19 bands performing. The coveted Burgh Trophy which goes to the top band on the day was won by MacKenzie Caledonian.
There was a top quality field in the heavy events, current World champion Scott Rider, London won the Fife 28lb Weight for Distance contest with a huge throw of 90' 1''. iIn the 56lb Weight over the Bar competition Lukasz Wenta set a new gound record with a throw of 16' 6''.
In the cycle events Charles Fletcher,Grantown on Spey won three of the four races including the SHGA Scottish 8000 metres Championship. As ever the running events were well supported, Marcus Archer,Aberdeen AC sprinted to victory in the Open 90 metres handicap while Aiden Thompson,Central AC landed a double with wins in both the 1600 metres and 3200 metres handicaps.
Outwith the main arena a full programme of highland dancing and solo piping took place.
