PAYNE blasts them with science in Somerset Gift Final

Jack Payne a 3rd year Bachelor of Science student at University of Queensland stormed home to win the inaugural Somerset Alumni 100 metres Gift on Saturday.

Running on a world class synthetic track 18yo Payne, running off 6m secured his first win in a smart time of 10.33 from fast finishing back markers Mitchell Pateman 4.5m and Nazmee Lee Marai 2.00m.

The Russell Hanson coached Jack Payne showed marked improvement from his Australia Day Gift sixth placing in collecting the $2500 first prize.

Payne works as duty manager at Woolworths to supplement his University studies expenses.

Pre-race favourite Alex Beck, a Commonwealth Games representative, loomed as a possible winner after the running of the heats and semi finals . Beck looked a winner when he flashed home to win the first semi following his second placing in his heat earlier in the day. However the superbly fit Beck chose to run in two 300metre events, heat and final which was staged only minutes before the Gift final. The two additional runs over 300 metres certainly took the edge of his Gift final run when he finished in 5th place.

In the Somerset Alumni Womens 100m Final, Ipswich Athletics Coach Vic Pascoe landed the quinella when his charges Hayley Wright (8.50m) and Elizabeth Melrose (10.50m) finished first and second. Like Gift winner Jack Payne, Wright collected $2500 for her 11.73 effort.

Wright made it a double, when she also picked up the NAB girls 16 years of age 100 metres final in 12.91.

Elizabeth Melrose 31m won the 300m in 38.18sec from Jemima Tennekoon 35m amd Beth Van der Waal 7m.

Middle distance athlete Adam Fogg (75m) showed a touch of class in winning the Mudgeeraba 1600 metres handicap in 4mins 02secs from Lachlan Irvine 90m
and Peter Bracken 170m .

Credit goes to all our good friends at Somerset College, volunteers and sponsors who put on an amazing day of racing for all age groups and distances.
