New meetings on the cards for the VAL in 2010/2011

Woodside (Gippsland)
Kyneton
Avondale Heights
Prahran

Woodside to have a $15,000 Gift and $8,000 women's Gift.

Kyneton is likely to be on the same weekend as Wangaratta as it was over 50 years ago.

Ararat to go in early April.

Ballarat to follow Stawell again - Saturday 30th April 2010.

I believe Mt Gambier is back on the first Saturday in December which means it will not be on the same weekend as Terang which is scheduled for the last Sunday in November.

In the 1950's the Kyneton Gift was conducted on the same weekend (Australia Day weekend) as Wangaratta.

In 1955 the Kyneton Gift was won by Henry McIntyre off 5¾ yards. He beat Marcus Arnold (who also ran from 5¾ yds) by one foot in 11.9s. D J McCann (8¾ yds) was 3rd.

McIntyre’s previous Gift win was the 1954 Lilydale Gift.

There were 9 heats and 3 semis. Both McIntyre and Arnold had been beaten in their respective semis but improved to fight out the final.

The 75 yards was won by W L Wettke (8½ yards) from W Preen (10¾ yards) ( I presume it was the same Bill Preen who went on to be a secretary & handicapper through the 1960’s) and E Keating in 7.3secs.

The 880 yards was won by R A Cook (33yds) in 1-56.5 and the mile won by E T Lake (130 yds) in 4-19.

AND On Monday 26th January 1959, 33 year old Norm McLeod won his third Gift in succession when he took out the 130 yard Kyneton Gift. McLeod had previously won the Port Fairy Gift on Boxing Day and the Maryborough Gift on New Year’s Day.

McLeod off 9¾ yards ran 11.9s to beat George Lucas (8 yds) and R Marr (9¼). There were 13 heats and 3 semi finals.

Meanwhile on the same day – the Butch Roberts trained Stan Warden won the Wangaratta Gift.

Great to see the return of the Kyneton Gift. Hopefully it can work in well with Wangaratta on the Saturday.

A little rumor floating around today was that Stawell was going to increase all of the prizemoney for its races.

Heard the same rumour, peter. Big money for the features like the Bill McManus 400m, Jack Donaldson 200m and the 800m

Also heard on the grapevine, Maryborough will be worth $50,000.

Makes it tough to want to go to Burnie.
