on the mens
Marks from 300m finalists at Marion - wilson unchanged. Rest up 3-5m
Hardly any interstaters
SO
Heat 1: Hunt, 2: May, Rothe, 3: Bulabek, 4: Verrall, 5: Russell, Wilson, WatkinsC
Backmarker 0.00 Watkins then 18m Russell with 23m Rothe, Bulabek, Verrall as frontmarkers in final
Top Pros Last 2 300m winners Wilson, Verrall
Top Amo Russell (PB for 400m of 48.5, ran 48.8 last weekend.)
Of CAMDEN16 finalists those that are tipped to miss WatkinsB, Stangewitz and Doderico all back 4-6m, Stenson PB 47.7 but 1.1sec over 800m PB last weekend suggesting he is on a longer program than Camden
Of the pros missing in the above list Keegan, Dartnall, Giralamo, Dawkins could surprise but it hasn’t been a frontmarkers race for a while.

Rookie

Hopefully with the handicaps and heats released it will spike a bit of interest in what has been a quiet build up to the second biggest carnival in SA.

I assume we will see a form guide as per previous years?

Heat 1.
Hard to go past Khudoshin at first look. Multiple finalist and is always around the mark at the big ones.
Looking a bit deeper though it may be the young ones in Hunt and Keegan that pose the threat. both with recent wins over the distance and being young they could  produce anything.

Winner - Hunt/Keegan

Heat 2.
2 names jump out in Rothe and May. Both finalists last year and both would dearly love to get the win. With an extra 2m from last year my pick is Rothe but both to be in the final.

Winner - Rothe

Heat 3.
Again 2 finalists from last year in this heat in Bryce and Deng and again they are hard to split but from what I have seen this season its Bryce that has the edge

Winner - Bryce Watkins

Heat 4.
Interesting heat with 2 more finalists from last year with the Victorian Doderico being pulled back after a win in the Backmarkers 400m at Stawell which probably puts him out of it. Stenson is due after narrowly being beaten by Clay Watkins in 2015 and getting caught in traffic last year. If he is in shape he will go close again. The surprise of heat 4 could be Verrall. His previous seasons over 400m have been average but a change of coach and change of approach could see him right in it.

Winner - Stenson

Heat 5.
Clay Watkins is a genuine freak of an athlete but coming from scratch might be a bridge too far. Russell is a previous finalist and is the obvious choice for this heat. With Dawkins move to Camden he would have done a little bit more of the required work so could well be a smokey. Sinclair is another that could surprise.

Winner - Russell

Final
Stenson
B. Watkins
S. Russell
Hunt
May
Rothe
Dawkins
Keegan

Winner - Rothe

Agree with some of Rookies calls, but BWatkins wont make the final off 11m. Too far back this year.
Choppers manlove for Clay clouds his judgement. Wont get closed enough to Russell and Wilson to final.
Heat 1 Wurm
Heat 2 May
Heat 3 Bulabek
Heat 4 Girolamo
Heat 5 Russell
Others  Rothe, Evans, Wilson.

1 May
2 Rothe
3 Wurm

I liked the way that Rookie wrote up his thoughts on the heats so did one myself. Took a bit of time so sorry for the delay.

Camden is one of the great 400m classics on the Australian pro circuit.

This is an extremely hard event to make the final as most heats are helter skelter. A relatively short back up from heat to final makes it brutal.

Camden is a unique circuit where positioning at the end of the back straight is crucial. It is a true 400m athletes track where early 200m speed is what is needed to win. 800m runners can sneak their way into the final through a spread out softer heat but always fall short in the final due to a lack of tactical early speed.

Mex’s tips

Heat 1 – Wurm – 2nd in Devonport gift is good enough form to win a heat here. Has tactical speed. Needs to get around an out of form Schutz before the final bend if he has any chance of nabbing Keegan. Keegan into final on time.

Heat 2 – May – Perfect sit on Rothe will tow him right to the line and strength will kick in late.

Heat 3 – Bulabek – He has drawn the perfect heat with no dangers in front of him. Seems to get lazy when he hits the front in races so will need to concentrate late in race to hold out talented up and comer Evans and Watkins will launch late.

Heat 4 – Girolamo – Handicap wins races. So does form. Girolamo has both. Off 40m has just enough tactical speed to gap the field here. Verrall the obvious danger but if they muck around or get too cute Stenson will eat them up late. Verrall into final on time.

Heat 5 – Russell – Gets the perfect sit on Wilson who has no choice but to get going early. Tronnolone the interesting runner as not too many decent sprinters would get a handicap in the 30’s. He will look the winner at some point but get swamped late. Wilson into final on time.

Final composition
Russell – 18m
Wilson – 20m
May - 22m
Bulabek – 23m
Verrall – 23m
Wurm – 26m
Keegan – 38m
Girolamo – 40m

The way the final lines up is always crucial at Camden. In my final the back 5 athletes will have a handicap spread of only 5m. Tactics are everything and the order of running between these 5 at the 200m mark is impossible to predict. One thing for sure is Wurm is in front of this pack and could never have imagined himself as the 3rd frontmarker. This is a massive advantage which will have him on his own in 3rd entering the final straight behind the 2 fronties. What happens from there is anyones guess but he gets his chance here. Will Keegan follow Girolamo or challenge him up the back straight. Girolamo was impressive winning the Ringwood gift but off a big mark. He has improved since (beyond what I thought capable) and is a great pro front runner. Off the front his ability to change pace and inject short bursts of speed will see him blow this field away.

1st – Girolamo
2nd – Russell
3rd - Wurm

This is one of my favourite races and cannot wait to see the vision.

You are all not realising how good Evans is! No one has tipped him and thats a big mistake. Was no one watching his 300m at Westerns where he got boxed in and sprinted home for second? He's got more speed than those around him. PLUS, he's coached by a man who has done it at this meet many times before with runners off tighter marks.

DISMISS HIM AT YOUR OWN PERIL!

Colin Rowston

Form Guide for 29th 400m Solo Resource Recovery Camden Women’s Classic

Nikki Austin 36m
One of the outright favourites. She’s been around the place in multiple long sprint finals including placing second in the 400m at Sacred Heart (53.49 off 36m) and the 550m at Bay Sheffield. She recently won the 300m at Marion (38.35 off 30m) but was a little off the pace in the 300m final at Western Districts. If she can bring her A-game she will be unbeatable.

Genevieve Brooks 32m
She recently finished towards the back of her heat in the 300m at Western Districts and suspect she will do no better here.

Ruby Buchanan 42m
A younger athlete who is really making her mark in the women’s category. She made the final last year (56.32 off 42m) and recently ran 59.72 over 400m at Santos. Based on her recent PB, she should be around the place!

Czenya Cavouras 32m
She blew everyone away early in the season, winning the 400m at Henley by almost a second (53.16 off 32m). Since then, she hasn’t run anything further than 200m. If she can run like she did at Henley she will be impossible to beat, especially off the same mark!

Leah Cece 52m
In her second season she’s becoming more of a regular finalist. Her best effort over this distance was coming third in the 400m at Sacred Heart (54.30 off 50m). She’s got a handy 2m lift and if she executes her race well, she could sneak into the final.

Hettie Driscoll 50m
Dual finalist. She placed second here in 2014 (53.62 off 50m) but has not been in the same shape this season. Based on her current form, she may only be capable of making the Consolation final.

Lily Drummond 36m
She won the 300m Under 18 Girls at Port Adelaide (41.01 off 16m) but we haven’t seen her run frequently since. It’s difficult to judge her form and she may choose to run the Under 18’s Girls.

Kirsten Fantinel 54m
She’s had the most success over this distance this season, making the 400m finals at Sacred Heart and Brighton. She should make the Consolation final and could even sneak into the Classic final.

Kelly Ferber 60m
She is having a really good season, having made a couple of long sprint finals including the 550m at Bay Sheffield and recently, the 300m at Western Districts. However, she will struggle with the limit here.

Tayce Fry 58m
She placed 4th here in 2013 (55.71 off 60m) and we haven’t really seen her compete since until recently, when she raced in the 300m at Marion and Western Districts. As she finished 7th and 4th respectively, she might have a better chance making the Consolation final.

Grainne Henry 46m
Like her sister, she has been running better over the shorter sprints. She is capable of making the Consolation final.

Niamh Henry 46m
Last season she won the 400m Consolation and made the 400m final at Stawell. This season she has shown more form over the shorter sprints. She will need to produce something special to make the final.

Edwina Kidd 40m
A new athlete this season who is yet to make a final. Maybe one for the future.

Teagan Kustermann 36m
Another athlete who will be vying to win this race. She placed third last year (54.98 off 36m) and recently ran 59.11 over 400m at Santos. We haven’t seen her run over this distance this season, but ran very well to win the 800m at Flinders and make the 550m Bay Sheffield final. She should be around the place!

Aimie Laube 24m
She was a previous state runner with a PB of 55.47 over 400m set in December 2007. It’s been a long time since she has competed with the League, until recently when she ran the 300m at Marion. She struggled off her tight mark but hopefully she’ll be a bit more competitive here.

Megan Leaney 46m
In her last run, the 300m at Western Districts, she finished last in her heat and based on her current mark, it will be difficult for her to make it beyond her heat.

Kayla Lemm 46m
She has made the last few long sprint finals including the 300m at Western Districts and Marion and the 400m at Brighton. Based on this form she could sneak into the final.

Karen Long 46m
She surprised a few last year by placing second in the final (54.09 off 46m). This season she has competed infrequently, but has failed to impress in the 300m at Marion and Western Districts, placing towards the back of her heat. She ran 61.52 for 400m last week at Santos, which is only just off her PB on 61.35 set in December 2015. She could be around the place again.

Lucy Mayo 40m
She was a favourite to win this race in 2015 when she placed 4th (55.24 off 32m). She placed last in the 400m final at Sacred Heart (56.55 off 36m) this season and finished mid-pack in her 300m heats at Western Districts and Marion. Although she’s not in the same form from two years ago, the additional 6m will be helpful. Another athlete who could be in the mix.

Lauren McHugh 56m
She has only made this final once, and that record is unlikely to change. Without having made any long sprint finals this year, she will be making up the numbers in her heat.

Natassia Messent 30m
Another dual Classic finalist. This season she seems to have struggled a bit over the longer sprints, save for her spectacular win in the 400m at Brighton (53.51 off 30m). If she can run like she did at Brighton, she will be around the place. Go the Flash!

Julia New-Tolley 36m
A new athlete with the League and is better known to run longer distances. She may be a little far back in the marks to progress past her heat.

Rommi Parham 48m
She is having the best season of her athletics career, having made and placed in most long sprint finals including 3rd in the 400m at Henley (54.56 off 52m) and 3rd in the 400m at Brighton (53.87 off 52m). She then won the 550m at Bay Sheffield. She is no stranger to the 400m distance, having placed 3rd in the Consolation and making the 400m Stawell final last year. If she can run like she did at the Bay, she will have no difficulty making the final.

Alisha Peeters 50m
She was running really well in the first half of the season, having made the 400m final at Sacred Heart and Brighton, and placing second in the 550m at Pre-Bay. We haven’t seen her compete since Brighton, so it’s more than likely that she might be a bit off the pace, if she runs.

Emma Pienaar 40m
She hasn’t run frequently with the League so it is difficult to judge her form. She finished towards the back of her 400m heat at Brighton, and expect the same here.

Rose Pittman 28m
Another talented athlete who has a good chance to make the final. She won the 400m at Sacred Heart (52.79 off 32m) and then later went on to win the 800m Under 16’s at the Australian All Schools championships. She recently placed third in the 300m at Western Districts so she’s in good form.

Amy Robb 46m
No stranger to making this final, with her best performance running second here in 2013 (55.63 off 42m). This season she came second in the narrowest of margins at Brighton (53.69 off 46m) and will be looking to go one better in the final.

Lisa Roberts 60m
She’s been running well over the 550m distance, placing third at Pre-Bay and making the final at Bay Sheffield. As she’s yet to show form over this distance, she will probably miss making any finals.

Simone Rothe 60m
She has shown a lot more promise recently, having made the 300m final at Western Districts. If she runs like that again, she could make the Consolation final.

Courtney Ryder 60m
She’s trying to get back into the swing of things post-baby number 2! Maybe one to look for in the next couple of years.

Jana Sims 50m
As she placed last in her 300m heat at Western Districts it may be difficult for her to make it beyond her heat.

Zoe Steele 46m
She placed 5th in the 400m final at Henley (55.20 off 40m). With a handy 6m lift she should be competitive enough to try and snag a spot in the final.

Kellie Symons 46m
She made the final here last year and has been running well over the short sprints, including winning the 120m at Marion. We haven’t seen her run over 400m this season and suspect it may be a bit far for her.

Ali Trewartha 33m
A couple of years ago she won the 400m at Stawell (in 2015- 53.96 off 38m) and is no stranger to making the Classic final. This season she hasn’t been running frequently, but is going okay, having placed third in the 70m at Western Districts. She was a bit off the pace in the 300m at Western Districts and suspect the same here.

A Calcutta was held at tonight’s Camden Classic function with the winner to take home $1105. Heat 1 featuring Harrison Hunt, Ollie Wurm and Chris Keegan went for $250. Heat 2 which includes Harry May, Hayden Rothe and Jarrad Dartnall sold for $190. Bryce Watkins, John Evans and Deng Bulabek all appear good chances in heat 3 and this was auctioned off for $250. The lowest winning bid ($120) was for heat 4 where Dylan Stenson, Jack Doderico, Connor Verrall and David Girolamo will all fancy their chances. The last heat sees Sam Russell, Brian Wilson, Josh Dawkins and Jordan Tronnolone lining up, with the heat being sold for $200.

Bumble Bee Man wrote:You are all not realising how good Evans is!

Why? Why did I not see this coming?  pale
What a win.
Good call Bumblebee.

Outstanding run considering the check he suffered from the Red runner with about 200m to go.
Watch the replay and you will see what I mean.

Especially if chopper's odds were on offer. haha
Don't know why but chopper didnt rate Evans for the final even though he beat his idol Bulabek.

unfair assessment "racing mania"
Evans 3rd fav in my odds before the event started
drifted out for the final as heat times were .6 below the favourite 4
since found out the times are a bit rubbery
not sure we should have fastest 3 losers in the final when the timing is well "not that accurate"
well done evans and hunt for such young men (maybe they were lucky they were on the novice mark - maybe not
but that is what our sport throws up and whoever wins camden deserves it (evans fpr alling over and hunt for attacking it so hard)
the amos need to take it more seriously than they do

Sorry chopper. I was going on your tips here. No Evans in the final.
confusing, you don't have evans in the final but had him 3rd favourite???
Not bad tipping tho, 5 finalists.

Just wondering who I can bother to get the complete results of the Camden Classic? SAAL are missing the consolation results. Does anyone know them?
