Who is the oldest person to have won the Stawell gift?
Has anyone over 40 ever made the Stawell gift final?
Hal Thomas was 37 when he was a close 2nd in the 70's.

BA

The oldest Stawell Gift winner was 35 years old (George McNeil) while 4 others have won it at the age of 31

Thanks BA.
When people on this forum use throw away lines such as "there are some vets who will give the final a shake", it needs clarification. A vet will not likely give the final a shake.
A young vet (35-38), at a stretch, may get into the final given the right form, handicap and semi final. However for Phelan to make the final at age 42, this would be quite a feat. One which I would like to see.

The 3 best vets I have seen this year are;
1. Jackson (38) winning Maryborough gift.
2. Stefaniak (36) winning the 120/300 vets double at Wangaratta.
3. Phelan (42) gives me the impression he is ready to fly.

Danny Zuko isn't running this year, Kenicki might win his heat and Sandra Dee will go close in the semi..... But the winner of the Gift will be my favourite Rizzo!

1st Rizzo -Didn't even look to slip it into 4th gear at Northcote. The young man is a blistering start and hits the ground with plenty of traction early.

2nd - McNamara is a ripper too. Can run a great 400m and won the prestigious Stonnington Gift last season.

3rd Riali Of the back/mid markers I like the looks of Riali. He will finish stronger than most this year and will be right in the mix if things go his way.

Would be surprised but very pleased if any of the vets can break 12.35 at Central Park off their marks.

Riali 12.40 off 3m in Bendigo semi. WAS due for 5m at Stawell with lift for Rye win. However bis rating just broke ceiling time of 12.25. He will now be off 4.50m or 4.75m at Stawell. He should not have run the gift at Bendigo and now pays the price.i hope his injury heals in time for nationals.
Romanin who won Bendigo in 12.28 will not receive the full lift for Stawell to keep him at 12.25.

Scrap Dunbar now but Phelan 12.28 puts him in the mix. Sensational run

I must drive home slower than you Riberia, you beat me to the punch. Riali's run reminds me of Spencer a few years back perhaps a little quicker than he wanted at the time. He cannot receive the full bonus now. It will depend on the generosity of the handicapper as 4.50m puts him right on the target time. Romanin as well will likely only receive a quarter. Any word yet on McNamara? He might be out of the equation now.

VETSUNITE - Don't discount Cam off one run that didn't get him into another final. He's proved his resilience over time and will bounce back I'm sure of that. Also don't get too excited by Phelan running 12.28, Bendigo is probably the fastest track of the series but he did go faster than I was expecting. Any faster and he too would not be in line for another 1/4.

How low can you go, overheard a the parent of a very recent gift winner complaining about other athletes handicap marks and lifts for stawell to the chief steward and handicapper on the weekend. Your son just won and got a lift himself, stop complaining. Sounds like its happening a lot from all the whispers. How about instead of hounding those in charge , you direct your focus on your own back yard. What will be will be come stawell.

Rizzo and all the other Stawell bonus athletes are a chance to make the final at best.
It will be the interstate athlete that gets thrown a bone and is in form that will win. Dunmall and Hale got thrown bones last year and came 1st and 3rd. TJ was stiff getting pulled 0.50m for a 200m p.b. He met Dunmall 1.50m worse off than Keilor and was beaten into 2nd at Stawell by a whisker.

George was 34 years and 2 months when he won the 1981 Stawell Gift. He was born 19th Feb 1947. The Stawell Gift final was held on 20th April 1981.

Huge difference in quality between George McNeil and the current crop of 34yo plus athletes.

It is rare for an over 35yo athlete to place in a Stawell Gift final, let alone win it.

Kevin Silver was 37 when 3rd in 1988. I can't think of too many others.

Wasn't exactly sure where to put this so in the bunnies poll it goes. There are a number of athletes who have entered but only a few took the bonus lift so lets look at them. This is assuming each athlete is fit.

Ryan Camille won the small Sandringham 100m off 7.25m in a time of 10.642. Where does this place him? He has 9.75m for Stawell. When you compare him to some of the others he has not done enough to be in the top 6. The bonus for him has placed him in that interesting area for some of the more fancied athletes in that he will get out quickly but I feel he will not hold on. Semi final seems a lock but I would be surprised if he challenges for another final.

Ryan MacNamara also took out a 100m race off 4m in a time of 10.473 which is why I think Camille will find it tough going. Ryan will run off 5.75m at Stawell. MacNamara has all the trademarks of a Stawell winner. He has previously won the 400m (if you have won the 70m, 200m or 400m in recent years you have had your trial as such), he is young enough to have improved as well. My only query for him is himself. Not sure how much his Bendigo run hurt his Stawell chances. I feel that he is in the top 10 chances if fit. Semi is a certainty and final not out of reach. He will be close on the line of a semi.

Isaac Dunmall travelled down to Terang and took out the gift off 3m. He will have 4m at Stawell. His time was not impressive enough to suggest that he has improved enough from last year. Not sure what others think there. I have him in the semi but not in the final.

Matt Rizzo took the last of the big lifts. He won Northcote 100m off 5.5 in a time of 10.402. He travels to Stawell with a very nice 7.5m. He has to be one of the favourites. I feel that he is a chance if he runs out the distance. I am not sure if he will handle any late pressure that very well may be coming at him. I have him in the top two overall chances and likely winner.

Elly Graf won Dayleford so no lift taken. Incentives across the women's races for next year is a conversation for after the season finishes.

Daniel Sonsini ran a slick time to win Castlemaine off 7 in 12.37. He has looked good for a couple of years as many had thought him a pea for last year. I have him clearly in the semi finals off his 7.75m and a very good chance of a final. How he ends up in the final is the question. Again I feel that he is a top 3 chance and a real danger to the likes of Rizzo.

Nathan Riali took Rye off 4m in a time of 12.559. His 4.75m at Stawell is enough for him to easily make the semi finals and more than likely get into a final. His form at Bendigo nearly cost him more than most with a quick time. His recent runs have him right in the mix. He will close late in the final on Easter Monday. I have him in the top 6.

Joel Bee won many races this year but it was the St Albans gift which has him in the best position to challenge for the final. off 0.75m he won in a time of 12.665 giving him 1.5 at Stawell. I am not on the Bee train here, he will find the going much tougher when the semis are won in 12.2 or less. Semi would seem a lock but the final is out of reach for me.

Carl Morehouse strolled down the track at Maribyrnong to win off 6.75m in a time of 12.9. I feel that he has a lot more to offer than this time suggests and would expect him to feature prominently in the semis. He will find it tough to make the final though.

Nick Magree won trinity off 10.75m in a time of 12.846. He is the only athlete who will actually come back from their winning mark. His 12.50 off 10.50 shows a little more of his calibre but he will definitely find the going too quick for his current form. Semi at best.

Aaron Leferink won Avondale Heights off 6m in 12.86 and finds himself now with 6.5m for Stawell. Small 120m event and Stonnington the night before, I feel that the main chances for Easter did not show here. Would need to improve to make the semi.

Thomas Maloney finally won a gift of 5.5m in a time of 10.57 at Geelong which is only a 100m race. He had been playing dukes and drakes a little earlier in the season by breaking in the finals or throwing in short steps (Rye comes to mind). I feel his time was quite good and it places him in with a chance at the final but I prefer some of the other winners to him. Can he improve for next year as Rizzo has done?

Chris Vi ran off 7.75m at Yarra Ranges to win in a time of 10.516. His 9.75m for the sheffield distance is not enough for mine. Not when you compare him to some of the others. He could make the semi and lead for part of the race but will not make the final for me.

Michael Romanin stole Bendigo from the ancient one that is Phelan. Winning in a very slick time of 12.274 off 4.5m resulted in him not getting the full lift he may have received only running off 4.75m at Stawell. If he has another gear of sorts he is a real threat to Rizzo and the like to not only make the semi final but also to give the final a shake. Top 8 for me.

Nick MacGibbon won Euroa off 6.75m in a time of 12.388. His 7.25m for Stawell is a good mark. I have been watching him for a while now and wondered if he had decided to wait another year. He has had some health issues so if healthy can be another to go close to a final. Top 10.

Cam Dunbar ran off 8.75m to win Ararat in a time of 12.44. His Semi time was better with 12.38. He goes to Stawell with 9.25m and is not someone I would like in my semi. I have him in the top 10.

Leigh Phelan will be the oldest finalist I can remember if he makes the final. He won the last possible chance of a lift at Ringwood and now has the limit at Stawell. His 10.30 for the 100m places him in a good space when compared to some of the other winners. I have him in the top 10 as well just not sure where.

The last two are a little unknown in that I am not sure if they will go better or not. I would not like either in my semi and if Rizzo, Sonsini or Riali do not eat a yard or two out of them early they may panic towards the end.

I have 3 or four Victorians in the final, I cannot see an entirely Victorian final. I am sure that there is someone who decided to hit the bookies rather than show early form for the win.

Good write up Mex... I think everyone will agree that Sonsini and Rizzo are the Vics to beat at this stage... The unknown is what is happening up north... Always going to be a couple of Queenslander's there abouts on the Monday.
