Local sprinter Ryan Atkins wins 2016 Bay Sheffield

Warren Partland,
The Advertiser
December 28, 2016

SOUTH Australian Ryan Atkins emulated the feat of training partner Sam Osmond last year to triumph in the Bay Sheffield Gift at Colley Reserve on Wednesday night.

Atkins (off 7.5m) justified the favouritism bestowed on him by bookmakers from Tuesday when he held off Queensland backmarker Tjimarri Sanderson-Milera and West Australian Evan Jarvis.

“I’m blown away by the whole experience,” Atkins said.

“At the start line, I just wanted to take it all in and put everything on the line.

“I was confident coming into the race. I’ve been training well for a while now, my coach Charles Sheffield is the best in the business.”

Atkins dismissed any notion being favourite could be a distraction, saying he loved the tag.

Victorian teenager Jessica Payne is the first winner of the historic women’s gift offering the same prizemoney as the men’s event. Payne, off 7.25m, claimed the biggest win of her career when she beat Cook Islands’ Olympian Patricia Taea and SA runner Mikayla Round.

The victory was a coaching triumph for former star SA sprinter Shane McKenzie, twice a runner-up in the Bay Sheffield who has worked with Payne for four years.

“I knew I was faster and fitter than last year (third in the final),” Payne said. “I knew the competition would be good but after the heat when I had the fastest time, I was a bit more confident.

“I’ve been working hard for months for this event and Shane is the best coach.”

Max Stevens’ brave move on the home turn was rewarded with an impressive victory in the 1600m Selected Backmarkers, beating Jacob Cocks and Paralympian Michael Rodger. After bursting clear entering the straight, Stevens held on well into the strong wind.

“To be honest, I was not feeling good warming up and did not think I was in it,” Stevens said. “But this is the Bay and all these people cheering, how good is this?”

Bryce Watkins secured his second 550m Open when he came from the backmark to overpower Sam Russell and Tom Lancaster.

The victory continues Watkins’ success at the Bay Sheffield meet, having won the 550m title in 2011 as well as two 800m crowns.

“I’m rapt with that one, that is as hard as it gets,” he said.
