Stawell 70m sponsor - the Gift Hotel in running for best regional sports bar

The Gift Hotel sponsors the Arthur Postle 70m and was recently announced as a finalist in the best regional sports bar.

The report says there's three pubs in Stawell? I thought there were four - Gift, National, Town Hall & Brix. Has one of them closed down?

The Gift Hotel is close to tasting statewide success after being selected as a finalist in the 2016 Australian Hotels Association State Awards for Excellence in the category of Best Regional Sports Bar.

The hotel has been selected as a finalist for the first time in the awards which celebrate the diversity and success of hotels across metropolitan and regional Victoria.

Moving from Western Australia and taking over the Gift Hotel last November, owner Peta Duns said it is an honour to represent Stawell at the awards.

“We were surprised when we got the results, we didn’t expect it,” Ms Duns said.

“Stawell is our home now and we’re proud to represent it at these awards.

”We have put a lot of hard work into the pub, we have decorated the inside with artwork on a variety of sports and we have made big investments into renovations such as the new beer garden.”

Ms Duns was an ambulance officer and her husband Gary Duns an operations supervisor for a mining company in Western Australia, before they decided to pursue their dream and run a hotel.

“We got advice from the previous owners and listening to the locals, it’s not hard to be nice and find out what they want in a hotel,” Ms Duns said.

The Gift Hotel is one of three pubs in Stawell.

Nominated hotels were judged on community involvement, customer service and the ability to represent a variety of sports.

Ms Duns said maintaining customer service and a very high standard at all times is important.

“If something isn’t good enough it won’t be served here, we like being friendly with our patrons and offering them the best service we can.

“Our management has helped us a great deal and a special thank you must go out to Matt Jones who was the former manager of the Town Hall, his help and the help of our staff has been huge and invaluable to our success.

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, November 14 at the Crown Promenade in Melbourne.

“We encourage you to book a table for what will be a sell-out event,” Ms Duns said. “It’s huge for Stawell, we are up against the whole of Victoria and it’s a chance to show the big boys in Melbourne how it’s done.”
