ROBERTSON GOES NAP AT STRATHMORE

SHANE FENTON reports from GLAMIS CASTLE

Craig Robertson,Logierait was the man in form at Sunday's Strathmore Highland Games winning no fewer than five of the six races on the card, all from the backmark. It was also a good day for the Bates family who filled the first two places in both the Open and Youth 90 metres races.

The Open 90m was won by Willie with Sam runner up and Wallace McGown,Sauchie in third place. The Youth equivalent saw Sean Bates edge home ahead of Steven Bates with Rory Manninger, California in third place.

Craig Robertson got his winning run underway in the 200 metres overhauling Wallace McGown close home, Sam Bates finished in third place.

The 400m was probably Craig's most comfortable win of the day, taking up the running with 100 metres to run he strode home ahead of Willie Bates and Wallace McGown.

Running from the backmark in the 800 metres Robertson again timed his run to perfection to collar Craig Bell,Forfar and Wallace McGown in the run to the finish line.

It was a similar 1 – 2 in the 1600 metres with this time Forfar Road Runners veteran Jack Davie taking third place. The latter turned in his best performance of the day in the 3200 metres but had victory snatched from him in the dying embers of the race by that man Robertson, Willie Bates stayed on to take third place.

The finish of the day came in the relay with Wallace McGown for the Clackmananshire team and Craig Robertson for the Angus team flashing over the winning line in unison, most called for a dead-heat, the judges however called Angus the winners, Wallace McGown was said to be still questioning the decision as he crossed the Tay Bridge on the road home!

Backmarker Rory Manninger produced a strong per formance from the backmark to win the Youth's 1600 metres from Sean Bates and Cody Balasz, USA.

There was more bike races than what there was riders with four cyclists contesting the five races.

Charles Fletcher, followed up his treble at Cupar with another 4 wins at Glamis, Paul Gallacher, Kirkcaldy won the opening 1600 metres before the Grantown on Spey man went on to win the 800m,3200m,4800m and 10 lap races. James Melvillee,Dumbarton and Davy Mathieson,Newburgh filled the minor berths.

There was a quality field of 9 competitors in the heavy events results to follow along with the Tug of War.
