Don Wilson died from cancer last Monday morning at 4am. His funeral was held at the Fawkner cemetry on the following Friday.
Don won numerous races on the pro circuit with his win in the 1968 Bendigo Thousand being his standout win. In a hard fought race he held out the Australian Sprint champion Dave Irvine who ran off 1/2yd.
He started with the pro's in 1961 and had his last run at Stawell in the early 2000's. He attended every Stawell up until two years ago when he became too ill for the trip. Don sponsored the sash for the Veteran's 100m sprint every year since its inception. Don spent time on numerous Gift meeting committees and was an early member of the Runners and Trainer Association as far back as the 1960's when they were fighting the VAL for recognition. He trained with Jack Clark for his Bendigo win and was training with Jim Spain during Jim's purple patch of Stawell Gift winners with McGregor, Durham and Pollock in the early 1970's. Like many old pro's he really loved his pro running.

Thanks Smokey.

Ran in the VAL for a long time old Don. From memory, he was still pretty competitive in open Gifts into his late 30's.

Don Wilson was 5th in the 1967 Stawell Gift final, famously won by Bill Howard  - the first man to win two Stawell Gifts.

In 1971 Don was the backmarker in the Stawell Gift semi final won by Treva McGregor. He was giving McGregor 3/4yds start and would have watched McGregor scorch up the track in 11.6, one of the fastest semi times ever in the pre-electronic timing days.

R.I.P. Don Wilson.
