2016 NGL Scouting Combine Results Released

2016 NGL Scouting Combine

by Jarrod Partridge
Thursday, 28 April 2016

Australian footballing talent was joined by a cast of international hopefuls at the inaugural National Gridiron League combine on the Gold Coast, hoping to prove their worth to league coaches ahead of the leagues 2016 kick off.

2011 Stawell Gift winner and Rio Olympics hopeful Mitchell Williams showed his fellow wide receivers a clean pair of heels, completing the 40-yard dash in 4.376 seconds, and the agility test in 4.454 seconds to beat all comers.

Competition was tight amongst the running backs, where Jack Marton put up an impressive 4.834 second 40-yard dash and 6.885 second 3-cone drill, just shading Austin Otis who had travelled from San Francisco to take part.

Four quarterbacks were eager to impress coaches with their arm strength and ability to place the ball, while the receivers proved that they have the ball handling skills and route-running intelligence to match their straight line speed.

The coaching staff were impressed with the ability of the local talent, particularly with the size and strength of the players on the defensive side of the ball, and believe many local players will be added to team rosters in the coming months.

The National Gridiron League will hold its first Australian combine on the 24th April 2016, at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast.

The combine is for Australian and New Zealand Residents to demonstrate their athletic ability and football skills to secure selection with NGL teams. Prospective international players presently in Australia are also eligible to participate. Athletes from other football codes are also strongly encouraged to participate.

The combine will feature several athletic tests conducted by specialized testing personnel. Following testing, select players will be invited to participate in football specific drills coordinated by NGL coaching staff. A report will be issued to every participant and will also be available via a mobile app.

Participants must register to participate in the combine. Registration cost is AU$59 per participant and payable upon registration. Registrations close on April 15, 2016.

Participants will be issued athletic shirt and shorts but must provide their own cleats and accessories. The event is non-contact, therefore pads and helmets are not required.
