Who is going to take out the Veterans double? Looks like heaps of chances in both races. Maybe John Hilditch in the 100, he is always around the mark and is coming off excellent results at Vic Masters at weekend. if Robert Adin produced Terang win early in season he will be in it. Ran fantastic time on slow track. The legend Ricky Dunbar would have won on Geelong win but almost sure won't have recovered from hammy injury at Euroa. Previous winners Horne and Sargeant must be in the mix especially Horne who would have gone close off same mark last year before pulling hammy in Semi. Boyle, K Mathews and Martin also in it.

300m is just as hard, Gerard Adams cruised  home at Yarra Ranges, went back but might have had that up his sleeve. Martin Barrow always thereabouts and Shane Buckingham has been making finals and might be ready to strike. The most travelled vet from near Dubbo Dale Jones could be best of outmarkers. Peter O'Dwyer put in enormous run at Ballarat so should figure.

But have probably left out winners!

Most years winner has run sub 11. Some close running with decent fields at yarra rangers over 100m is a good indication. 300m will be interesting. Not many break 35 seconds for a run. Ballarat showed 2. Both maybe a good chance.

At least 3 runners will break the 35 barrier. I see a winner around 34.2 -34.5..... on a dry track

The double at Stawell is no easy task. The 300m always delivers, last season with Phelan flying home was great to witness. I would think that the main chances for both the 100m and 300m will have set themselves for one not both. I would have picked Lehmann for the 100m but not sure if he will be fit after Bendigo.

100m Masters:

Rob Lehman - Was looking the goods in the past few weeks and if he recovers well he'll be in the mix if not across the line first off 4.75m
Martin Horne - On 8.5m again this year and smashed out an 11.005 in 2015, so if he turns up in better shape he can go sub 11 which is where you'll need to be to win
Walter Pasquali - One to never count out and has an extra 25cm on last year so will go very close
Kev Matthews - Ran 2nd in 2015, nearly broke 11 and comes in with a 1/4 more as if fit, definitely in with a chance

Rogers, Mair and Boyle to be up there as well

Not too sure if anyone is positioned to take out the double - possibly Mair if fully fit.

Shillito is my tip for the guy most likely to do the double. He's been right on the money all year in both the Vets distances

I'm with Fishbowls and think the big unit Scotty Rowsell is well placed to get the job done in the 300m but I'm undecided in the sprint. Would be interested in finding out who Cantrun's big smokey is though.

Could be Pollard or Rowsell I guess. Both could win the 100m and 300m. Can Rowsell win the 70m as well is the question. He will likely walk away with a win.

Pollard. 2 wins in last 2 weeks in womens only races. Picked up about $1000. No pull in vets handicap from Geelong.
Mathews. Well treated for coming 2nd last year

300
Shilito 2nd, 2nd then win non penalty The obvious one.
Pasquali & Barrow look ready.
Rowsell. Under 36 at Ballarat.
Beckenham. 49.5 400m over hurdles when at his prime. He may not be in shape but 26m is too generous when others get 10m first up.

What do you mean Oldman!

I think 'oldman' maybe baffled as to why anyone would take the time to post on a topic that solely focuses on athletes over the age of 35. Interesting perspective especially with a stage name of 'oldman' :-)

But we must thank him anyway for increasing the post count by one more - so well done!

Well said OldandSlow, with longevity on the increase there will be more and more vets.

Great to see. Us oldies should get a piece of the banter!

Good luck to y'all this weekend.

Reasonably confident that a particular athlete will brain them in the vets 100m and propably take out the 70m as well. Only thing that will stop him is an injury or a break. 300m vets is a little more open. Several runners are well capable of running sub 35 seconds. Have to stick with Pasquali to take out the chocolates.

Crashed and burned Graeme.... mental toughness is everything when it comes to winning up there... and unfortunately not everyone has it.

The initial post said I would probably leave out the winners of the vet 100 and 300m and I did. How I left Shillito out of calculations is beyond me. I had seen him go close all year and he got a well deserved victory. He was unlucky not to get the double, he was beaten by a handicapping certainty Reid who had two NSW 300 wins this season. His times were 32.5 off 53m and he had 32.96 off 55m. Another handicapping blunder.

Blunder you say. I say calculated. Strong long time NSW and TAS connections faired very well indeed.

Then again the 300 winner is 57 years old. If you can't beat him off 42m then may be Vics need to improve. Same with TAS front 400 winner. Looking at his age if you canot beat him you simply need to improve. Vics have got a bit lazy due to system throughout the year.
