Not sure what form he is in this season but Eric Sapac ran a placing last year, so he would be worth including.

Was wondering if Camden has ever thought of going to a Sat afternoon /evening.Im sure they have.
Hot weather forcast for next four days is hot hot hot, not sure of forcast after that.
With most clubs now heading for evening meetings I reckon the Camden Classic would be great under lights.
If it gets put back to the evening because of the weather it makes it difficult for interstaters.
Like I said Sat evening ,followed by after party somewhere ,where Camden pocket some of the profits sounds good to me.
Perhaps Colin can explain why not.
And by the way Youngy Im not convinced the winner is in your list .

Curious,

Unless you are entered for Camden or genuinely have an interest in the meet, other than to be a spectator, I'm not sure you should be offering advice to Colin Rowston about how or when to run their meeting. It's the first Sunday in February and that's where it should stay. Anything else and it runs the risk of clashing with AA and/or ASA events.

AND I didn't say the winner was on the list. What I suggested was based on FORM from this season and on past Camden results, I offered a current top 16. This list is dynamic and can change with results from week to week.

Therefore I was not going to include athletes on the list who have not run much or have no form over the distance.

Like Colin, if you have someone who should be on the list - make a case for him - and if he fits the criteria he'll get added.

The idea of a Saturday night Camden Classic has been discussed. There are a few things against it. The immediate thing is that SACA desperately need to use Camden Oval on the Saturday for cricket due to a lack of turf wickets so they are very reluctant to give it up. Another thing is the lighting is currently quite poor at the Oval so we would need to spend considerable money on hiring lights. It is also much better for media (Advertiser, Messenger) on a Sunday afternoon rather than a Saturday night. And finally, we have settled on the "first Sunday in February" as our timeslot so everyone knows when it will be.

That's not to say it definitely won't happen in the future, especially if the nominations keep rising and we need to make it a 2 day meet!

Here's the Vic form through the eyes of Ribera.

It is a shame for St Albans that they put a 400m gift on the same weekend as Camden. It has robbed St Albans of some quality.
Ringwood 400m gift is the main Vic form line that should be respected.
Generally for Camden Classic you need to be a sprinter who can run a 400 or a 400 runner who can sprint.

Adam Coote - Finished just behind Boudrie in Ringwood heat. Current Bendigo 400 title holder and entitled to fancy his chances here. True 400/800 type who possesses nice 800 style kick down. Does lack genuine sprint speed and this is a big negative at this track as he will lose his positioning in the back straight and then be blocked for a run when he musters his speed around the final bend. Will win the consolation final.

Bradley Armstrong - On the comeback trail from injury and goes well when his body co-operates. Form no good at the moment and no doubt here to enjoy a weekend away with friends. Usually has the good oil on the Hipworth crew so watch the money trail.

Eric Sapac - Was fat at start of season after European vacation. Has stripped fitter since Christmas and ticking along nicely now after running an impressive heat to make Ringwood final. Was the one to beat last year in anything from 400 to 800 before breaking down before Stawell. Starting to approach that form again and is dangerous in anything for the rest of the season. If he is in your heat, prepare like it is a final.

Kristopher McCarthy - Former Australian 800m rep also returning from injury. He is carrying more weight than pharlap but is now out in front of the novice mark in all distances in Victoria. Good that he is being encouraged and made competitive in his rehab stage but could burn the handicapper at some stage due to his class. Will be underdone for this event but maybe not at Easter time.

Matthew Callard - Has not ran a 400 this season so assume is coming over only to support his very strong stable. Is starting to sprint well on the straight course and is very good when right over 400m. Made the Stawell gift final a couple of years ago so not long ago to good form. He has 2 qualities similar to Coote that you cannot teach. 1) a gun street-smart racer 2) will not choke under pressure. A lot to like if he is ready.

Matthew Hargreaves - In Ringwood 400 final and going very good. Won the Woodside 120 gift off a handicap in the 6m range and just seems to be getting better the further back his handicap goes. Is now back amongst a quality band of Vic 400m runners (S Hargreaves, Boudrie, Taylor, Steinhauser) which has not been seen in Victoria for some time. Won this race 2 years ago so must be respected. Can final.

Matthew Shiel - Another on the comeback trail and here as a warm-up partner for stablemate. In 2009 Bendigo final before breaking down. Only run this season is a 51.15 at Rye. Was impressive in 2009 but not in that form yet.

Peter Spence - Has not made a 400 final this season. Is known over the quarter mile journey after coming 4th in 2009 Bendigo black opal final and therefore was a surprising 2nd in Wangaratta 800 last weekend. Would be shocked to see him in the 400 final but will get to talk to Terry earlier in the day.

Robert Keenan - In last 3 400m finals in VAL including a close 5th at Ringwood. Seems to be thriving under Henry this season and now starting to make inroads over the 550/800 distance. This will assist his strength at the end of a gruelling 400. Lacks genuine 120 speed but is near the 40m limit handicap wise so won't be affected as much as Coote. Is a young chestnut(otherwise known as "Indian Red") colt and may be the best handicapped of Henry's for this race (Henry's best will be left in the barn at home).

Shaun Hargreaves - In all the big 400 finals this season at Woodside, Ringwood and Wangaratta as well as big 550m win at Movember. Won last seasons Devonport 400 and now just expect him in any big 400 final. Was flying last year over 120m and did win 70m at Woodside but has not shown anything like that form this season over 120m. Is a genuine class 800m runner in the making (similar to Boden) so may be heading down that path. Will be a tough ask from his handicap but Tippins showed it can be done from the backmarks if ready. Shaun has shown time and again he is capable and as such expect him in the final.

Thanks Ribera, very comprehensive form guide.

St Albans is on this weekend.

Just for the record, Camden is on Sunday 6th February (next week) therefore it clashes with Avondale Heights (scheduled for Saturday 5th Feb).

Avondale Heights' main race is the $3,000 Avondale Heights Gift over 400m.

As Ribera pointed out - That is disappointing - to have two high prizemoney 400's on the same weekend.

Your list was put together by using this seasons form and past Camden Classics yet left out Theil and Dartnal who figured promantly last year They have both been in form this season.Just checked the results and Sapac just beat Theil in the final placings last season. Dartnal won the sprint at Marion. They both wouldnt be out of place in the list.
As for my suggestions about a Sat race ,just because it has always been the first Sun in Feb doesnt mean to say it always has to be.After party in a marquee on the oval after the race would be a great fund raiser. Marquee could be put up straight after the racing.Easy place to get to by tram Think outside the square.

Been thinking on the weekend,I do a lot of it.
Contrary to what Youngy may think its not advice I offer Colin but suggestions which may help improve a great meet to make it even better.
Has any thought ever been given to instead of having a Consolation 400m to having a Backmarkers 400m
Would be very interesting to watch 8 runners running off cramped marks jostling for positions in a bunched field with no lanes for 400m.
The crowd comes along to watch the best runners and this way the backmarkers get another chance if they meet with bad luck in their heat.
I for one would like to see Boden run twice for his flair and brilliance and if hes unlucky in his heat to finish further back than 2nd that wont happen.
Also it rewards the backmarkers who are prepared to front up and run knowing that the job may be ahead of them
Okay Youngy shoot me down if you may but its only a suggestion

curious- I get the impression you want to create an argument for the sake of it. It might be time for you to register and become a member before you post....

Anyway - the idea of a 'backmarker's 400m has one fatal flaw - there are not enough quality 400m runners to justify it. In recent years, the best backmarkers have been in good enough form to make the Camden final, which would have left a very ordinary field for any 'backmarkers invitation 400'.

Recently James Boden won off 7m over 300m at Marion. He is going pretty well over the shorter distances at the moment, but I don't believe he's improved that much he should be winning off a a single digit handicap in a 300m. The only other winners off a mark less than 10m in an SAAL 300m in the last 15 years have been Tippins & Watkins who were sub 47s 400m runners. Boden's not that good (sub 47s) - so in my view for him to win off 7m - the standard & depth is not as good as it has been in the past.

Don't get me wrong - the win at Marion was fantastic, and he had to run better than he had ever run before to get up....but it has to be kept in perspective.

Marks for Camden were prematurely placed on the SAAL site.

They've since been removed.

Still some changes to be made & confirmed.

Will be published tomorrow.

Curious as to why the 400m o35's is being run in between the 120m open semi and the 120m final. Basically if I make the final of the 120m open and hopefully I do, then the smart for me to do is to scratch the 400m o35's. If it was run with the same programming as the 400m open etc I can still do it without wasting my money entering an event that is now not conducive to a potential better performance in the 120m open. Be great if likely programming was available at registering.

Hasn't won anything between glenelg and Camden. Ran 49.4 in decathlon recently, but a fair bit of his PB?? There's probably other changed marks that stand out, but this one is worth noting! Must be a mistake

I would take Nitschke and Khudoshin out as they lack the raw speed and I would add in Keenan and Long-Scafidi. Tohl does look the Danger though, remember he didn't run in the final last year and hasn't wasted his time entering the gift this year.

You can't disregard Boden as well. The guy just won the last 300m off 7m. The distance gets longer and one thinks he would get better!

The men you really needa look at are the ones blessed with that turn of foot thatll be crucial coming down the straight. Saliu fits this mould perfectly, whether the Saliu from last year rocks up, who knows. I have to agree with this Marvolo character, Boden will go close to winning again. Off of 8m, won the 300m at Marion and although he didnt set the world alight in the Hunter Track Classic, he'll lift for this you'd think. Tohl is the man aswell, cruised around to win his heat last year and looked like spoiling the YGTS quinella last year, probably would of had he run. Doesnt seem to be in the same form, but still is a big danger. Of the interstaters, Mr Versatility Shaun Hargreaves looks good again, made this final last year, why not again. Koschade aswell looks alright off that mark, has the speed, knows what its all about down here, and was unlucky not to make the final last year. If he gets a good heat, he'll like his chances.

Boden, Koschade, Tohl, Hargreaves, Saliu?.

Would all the worthy winners!!

Cosgriff ran 53.2 off 39 at Stawell a few years ago and was 3rd in the sprint at St Albans last week - not bad lead in form for a distance runner. Big Chance in the womens.

They probably shouldn't have entered the classic, then they might have had a call up...

Mate, take your blinkers off, james & caldow are not mugs, both have PB's in the 10.8's. if they ran in vic, james & caldow would be giving the hargreaves's a start.
neither hargreaves has broken 10.9 yet. their best events are 200m to 400m.
james & caldow are the best two 50m sprinters entered for the meet and will be a great race.
