OUCH!
A 9second improvement in 2 weeks to win the 800m.
That's gotta sting the handicapper.

That's a 7.3% improvement.
OR....for the sprinters out there, it's like running 12.9 at Wang and then 11.95 at Ballarat over the 120m.

800m improvement would not have gone unnoticed.

Stewards report will be worth a read.
The Gift final might have ben different if A) there was no guaranteed lift system and B) It was still worth 10k plus for the winner.

Not sure how some got their lift for Trinity on what I saw.

C'mon guys that's a bit harsh. Let's just file it in the Inconsistant Junior file. I'm sure there is a reasonable explaination for it

he is a novice runner as far as i can see he runs in the restricted 400m races and as yet i cant see where he has won a race. i cant see him having a race in a open 800m last year.the novice mark for 800m is 40m he has 60m?

Double Jeopardy

I don't know if he has previously run Open 800s but he's run VAL for a number of seasons so there would be no need to start him off the noncompetitive 40m mark in open company. Three open 800 runs this season prior to Ballarat. (Northcote 10th in heat - 60m)
(Albury 7th in heat - 60m)
(Wangaratta 5th in heat - 64m)

Last season he ran 3rd in the Under 20 800 at Stawell off 82m (1.56.1). Based on that, a 60m handicap in the open 800 with a starting net time of 1.52 was fair enough. That's a tremendous effort to improve so much (regardless of age) since that time.

A great run from a promising athlete. Perhaps we should all be a bit more positive about the result.

thanks for that reply, my runner kyle hilson is also a novice runner and has run in u20 800m races off more than 100m h/cap he was allocated 40m the novice mark in his first open 800m and the handicapper was adamant that he had to run off the novice mark which i thought was ridiculous from his u20 h/cap

That's incorrect. Page 7 of the VAL Handicap regulations.

Initial handicap allocation.

"If a VAL registered athlete has competed regularly over other similar distances within the VAL, the Handicapper can apply to the HRP to allocate an initial handicap that is more than the novice handicap. This will only be approved if the athlete’s performances over other similar distances clearly show they require a greater handicap to be competitive and the athlete’s current handicap over the similar distance is completely out of balance with the novice handicap for the distance they are entering."

It would lack common sense if Kyle started off 40m.

The Ballarat Steward's report is in and the handicapper and stewards have decided a 9sec improvement in the 800m in 2weeks does not require any action.

Zero consistency in distance handicapping and stewarding this year.

??????????????????????????

2 glaring omissions. top 10 fastest from heats, well outside top 10 on semi times.
1 went from 12.57 to 12.85
2nd went from 12.66 to 12.84

1 more went from 12.61 to 12.78. And got a lift. go figure?

Getting away from the negativity. Jolly good show by Noddy Angelakos. Two years in a row a mid 30's athlete has discovered the elixir of youth and sped faster down the Ballarat track than he has ever done before. It's a beautiful thing to behold.

Couldn't agree more with Trackstar, I enjoyed the weekend and really enjoyed watching that classy final. Clearly remains one of the best gifts on the Vic calendar. Noddy has had a stellar season and deserved to win a classic. Keen to see how he'll run this weekend with a min 1.5m pull. My tip is he still squeezes into the final, maybe?

In reply to you airtight, if you look at all the times, everyone seemed to have lost a bit of time on Sunday. Maybe the track was a little heavier on day 2?
