Millrose Games promises excitement as World Champs looms

By Roland Brammer

New York, USA — A number of Jamaican athletes will compete at the 104th staging of the Millrose Games, which will be held at Madison Square Gardens this Friday starting at 4:00 pm.

This event is the first in the VISA championship series to kick off the official start of the track and field season for 2011. Fans can expect to experience a night at the world-renowned Madison Square Garden with the ambience, history and great international competition that Millrose has to offer, on any budget.

This year for the first time the organisers have put in place a USA against Jamaica challenge where the rivalries between America's Lauryn Williams and Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown will resume. The Jamaican athletes (women) confirmed to compete are 2010 World Indoor 60m champion Veronica Campbell Brown, newcomer Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, from the University of Connecticut and the infamous Golden Krust Bakery clan will contest the 60m, Jamaica's hurdles champion Vonette Dixon will compete in the 60m hurdles, as well as the 60 m dash. The three Jamaicans will be competing against 2005 World 100 metres champion Lauryn Williams and twin sisters Me'Lisa (2006 world indoor champion at 60 metres) and Miki Barber.

Dixon will be facing a tough and experienced field in the 60 metres hurdles comprising of Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Perdita Felicien, while the USA will be represented by Queen Harrison and Danielle Carruthers.

Representing the Jamaican men are Nesta Carter, 2010 world indoor finalist who became the talk of the sprinting world last summer when he lowered his 100 metres personal best to a blazing 9.78. He will be joined by Lerone Clarke, a three-time World Indoor 60m competitor and 21-year old Oshane Bailey.

The Jamaicans will be challenged in the VISA men's 60 metres by the USA team of US champion and world indoor 60 metres silver medallist Mike Rodgers, Trell Kimmons, 2010 USA outdoor bronze medallists and Ivory Williams.

Jamaica's Edino Steele will compete in the Mel Sheppard Men's 600-yard run against USA's World Champion Bershawn Jackson, Jamaal Torrance and Trinidad's Renny Quow.

The Howard Schmertz's women's 400 metres will see an All-American race of Natasha Hastings, Dee Dee Trotter, Angee Henry and Moushaumi Robinson.

Other famous faces to compete include Kenyan-born Bernard Lagat, representing the USA as he tries to win the Wanamaker Mile for the ninth time. He will be up against Lee Emanuel from Great Britain, Deresse Mekonnen (Ethiopia), Pablo Soares from Mexico, Peter van der Westhuizen of South Africa and Ameircan David Torrence.

World Indoor champion Christian Cantrell will be showcased in the VISA Men's shot put to be contested by Reese Hoffa, Adam Nelson and Ryan Whiting.

Fabiana Murer of Brazil will be competing in the Fred Schmertz Women's pole vault against Jenn Suhr, Becky Holiday and Melinda Owen all from the USA, with Jillian Schwartz, formerly competing for USA, now representing Israel.
