Sprinter Matt Davies is geared up for the Australia Day
gift at Evandale today.

Davies on track for Australia Day Gift

COMMONWEALTH Games sprinter Matt Davies is hoping his background as a 200m specialist will propel him to a history-making third win in today's rich Australia Day Gift at Evandale.

While the $10,000 first prize will be contested under handicap conditions over 120m, Davies is banking on his background in 200m events to give him the advantage as he chases his third straight win.

Davies was the fastest Australian over 200m last year, recording 20.54sec in Perth in February and also owns the third-fastest 100m time in Australia in 2010 with a 10.23sec at the same meet.

"The 120m works well for me," Davies said yesterday.

"There are some runners that struggle over 100m but I don't have that problem running 200m."

Davies qualified for the semi-finals of the 200m at the Delhi Commonwealth Games and last year created a slice of history by becoming the first person to win back-to-back Australia Day Gifts.

His quest for a memorable treble today will not be easy with Davies to start as the event's backmarker off a 1m handicap. His main rivals, Canberra-based university lecturer John Jakeman and Papua New Guinean Ian Wybron, will jump from handicaps of 6.5m and 8.75m respectively.

"You have always got to be hungry and always want to win but I won't know for sure until the heats how my form is," Davies said.

"I won't know how my form is because this is the first race of the season for me."

Despite dominating the event in the past two years, Davies is expecting a hard-fought contest today, especially with the five-figure cheque awaiting the winner.

"It would be nice (to get the treble) but the nature of the competition isn't easy and it could be anyone's on the day," Davies said.

Today's event (heats 1.30pm; final 2.50pm) is part of the Australia Day celebrations at Evandale Parklands.
