Matt Shiel making headlines in the US College Circuit

Go down  Message [Page 1 of 1]

I just found out that my old training partner Matty Shiel has been making headlines in the US College Gridiron circuit.

Matt what was a very promising middle distance sprinter who had has athletics career cut short due to crippling injuries and consequent surgeries. Very unassuming guy who has barely mentioned his success as a punter for Auburn University in the US.

Well done Matty, amazing effort to move to US and make a name for yourself in such a tough sport.

Auburn's Australian punter uses rugby skills to save the Tigers

Auburn was forced to punt in its first drive against Kansas State, and the drive nearly got a lot worse ... until the punter saved the day. Matthew Shiel, a freshman from Australia, scooped up the punt and used the skills he learned during high school rugby to get the punt off.

It could have changed the quarter, too. Auburn got a fumble on K-State's ensuing drive and started the scoring off with a field goal.

Thanks for the update on Matt Shiel, Hitman.

Auburn is a top football college. Get a game at Auburn and you must be able to play.

Carolina Panthers star Quarterback Cam Newton (currently 9-0 in the NFC South) was recruited number one in the draft from Auburn (2011).

One of the biggest college games of the year is the traditional Ironbowl played between Alabama and Auburn towards the end of November each year. It's generally a sell out. Tickets are well over $200 per ticket.

These two colleges have a massive rivalry and some of the supporters are devastated for weeks by an adverse result.

I remember watching a Fox Sports doco on the Alabama v Auburn rivalry and it's crazy how bad some of the supporters react when they lose the Ironbowl. Especially the Alabama fans.

In 2013 an Alabama fan was sentenced to three years jail for poisoning a famous 130 year old Oak Tree in Auburn. The tree on Toomer's Corner, was the traditional meeting place for Auburn fans after football wins.

If Matt Shiel gets a game v Alabama - it will be a sporting experience he'll never forget.

"Let's Go While We're Young"

Great read Youngy, he did say that they had get Police escorts to certain, games, really full on. You have to laugh when you read the yanks saying that he used his "high school rugby skill's, - Matt played Aussie Rules for Xavier College as midfielder/half forward.
