1 VRTA Meadowglen Gift 2015 on Thu Nov 05, 2015 7:05 am

Hi All,

The final entry numbers for Meadowglen are in and this year is showing to be a bumper year, with entries up by 72 across all this year's events. This is a record number of entries for Meadowglen/VRTA!

Numbers are down on the 400m restricted, U20 800m and the Open 3200m.

The commitment of the VAL/VRTA and the VAL Coaches towards junior sprinters looks to be in a great place with entries rising from 19 in 2013, 22 in 2014 and 24 in 2015. Steady increase will no doubt be securing the future of the sprint events.

The 70m Open is up by 21 over last year when we had front markers and back markers separated. This season will see 13 heats. All heat winners and 3 fastest times will advance to 2 semi finals.

Car Finance 4 You is onboard again supporting the Women's 200m, so we are now looking strong as one of the many premiere Women's events of the season and the second richest Women's 200m in the country behind Devonport ($3000). With 34 entrants, we are looking at 5 heats with each winner and 3 fastest times progressing to the final where the winner will receive $840.

7 Heats of the 200m will commence around 1:30pm, with the City of Whittlesea once again being the main sponsor putting up $2500, with the winner taking home $1250 first prize. Heat winners and the 9 fastest times will run off in 2 semi finals, with those not making it to the final earning themselves $31 as losing semi finalists.

The Open 550m has the strongest entries in recent years, up by 8 to make a field of 54. With the VAL enforcing new minimum prize money amounts this season, the 550m has gone up $100 to a total of $600 this season, with the winner pocketing $330.

The Masters 300m has seen the greatest growth with 23 more starters than last season. If this is any indication on the rest of the season, there should be some entertaining racing to watch this year! It is highlighting the transition of the senior athletes sticking around in the sport longer and longer to remain competitive in the Masters events. All the more reason we need to boost junior numbers.

Even the combined Women's/Masters 1600m has attracted more entries again this season. Once again, the VAL's minimum prize money has seen a further boost in the combined events go up to $700 and increasing numbers of Female and Masters athletes is pushing these numbers up.

As to why the U20 800m numbers are down, could be result of many reasons, so it's up to coaches to continue to recruit, develop and encourage junior middle distance runners to compete in our League. the 400 Restricted numbers being down could also indicate the growing strength of runners progressing into Open ranks, again, coaches need to work on the recruitment, development etc.

The 3200m numbers are once again, very disappointing and once again, the VRTA will discuss if this event goes ahead next season or not. 2013 had 28 entrants, 2014 had 26 entrants and 2015 is down to 17. It's difficult to justify $700 prizemoney for 17 entrants v being the "responsible thing to do" and put on the 3200m as there are so few of them on the calendar these days.

Would we be better in putting on a 1600m Open, or even 2000m Open? Scrapping it in favour of an 800m Open to work alongside the Open 550m to give many athletes the option of a second run over a similar distance? All things for the VRTA to consult members over within the next 12 months.
