COMPETITION 'KEEN' AT BURNTISLAND

Shane Fenton reports from  THE LINKS

Desite the rain arriving midway midway through proceedings it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors at the 363rd Burntisland Highland Games on the Links on Monday. The wet conditions however forced the highland dancers to retire to a nearby hall to complete their programme. There was an excellent entry for the track events while the heavy events included newly crowned World champion Scott Rider who took the title at the Loch Lomond Games at Balloch on Sunday.

The top prize of the day is the £250 which goes to the winner of the Open 90 metres handicap and it was won for the second successive year by Geoff Keen, Selkirk who snapped the worsted in 9.45 seconds to edge out fellow Borderers Connor Gillan, Kelso and Ryan Houten, Cardrona. There was a Pitreavie AC 1-2-3 in the Open 200 metres handicap with Ewan Dyer hitting the line in 22.80s ahead of club mates Michael Burns and backmarker David Brand.  a big field of 16 runners contested the Open 800 metres handicap and it produced the race of the day with Craig Robertson, Pitreavie snatching victory on the line from from Saturday's St Ronans Games winner Rory Anderson,Hawick with Dean Whiteford, Innerleithen in third, the winners time was 1m 57.56s.

Matthew Turner, Campeltown turned in a fine performance to win the 1600 metres handicap stopping the clock at 4m 31.75s, Michael Deason,Shettleston came through the field from the 40m mark to take the runners up spot with Dean Whiteford again occupying 3rd place. American Deason went one better in the 3200 metres handicap. Running from the backmark he worked his way through the field and hit the front on the penultimate lap overhauling long time leader Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie who finished in second place with Tyler White, Pitreavie AC in third.

Runners from the Borders won the three Youth races on the card, Kyle Taylor, Chirnside took the 90 metres in 10.35, Liam Bouglas, Hawick was the victor in the 200 metres in 24.02 with Josh Abbot, Chirnside landing the 800 metres in 2m 07.92s.

The Binn[Hill] Race for local athletes was won by Neil McNicoll with Adele Osbourne the first female finisher.

The bikers had to endure slippy under wheel conditions, Gus Gillies, Peebles took the 1600 mettres, James Melville, Dumbarton the 3200 metres, Craig Hardie, Dalgety Bay gave the Fifers something to cheer by landing a double in the 4800 metres and Del tak the Hindmost events.

Five competitors contested the ever popular heavy events, Lucasz Wenta emerged overall victor on the day with wins in the 16lb shot putt, 28lb for distance , 56lb for height and shared first place in the caber along with his brother Sebastien and Scott Rider, the latter was the victor in the 56lb for distance with Kyle Randalls the winner in the 22lb hammer.Icelander Thor Glylfason helped add a continetal flavour to the competition.
