1 Right number of athletes for a coach? on Thu Jul 16, 2015 9:06 am

Some weeks ago I was talking to a coach who told me he had over 30 athletes in his squad. He boasted how good it is was. They won heaps of sashes but none of them are elite level runners. Some good but most average.
I was talking to another coach on the weekend who said he use to have a big squad but found it too hard. He now has 5 athletes and says that's much more easier to keep control of.
Got me thinking what's a good number for a coach to have. My thinking is unless you are a full time coach, 30 is way too much unless you have 2 or 3 assistants.
Working full time with a family, hard to see how you can properly coach 30 athletes. I think that's conveyor belt coaching.

Any thoughts?
