WOOLWORTHS SIGNS ON AS NAMING RIGHTS PARTNER

Date: 18th March 2015

With less than three weeks to go before the running of the famous Stawell Gift, Australia’s largest supermarket retailer, Woolworths has jumped on board as the Naming Rights partner. The new partnership will breathe fresh life into the much-loved event, ensuring that it will be bigger and better than ever before.
Until last month the Stawell Gift, one of Australia’s most iconic sporting events, remained without a Naming Rights partner for the first time in over two decades.
Stawell Athletic Club (SAC) president Trevor Skurrie said the partnership with Woolworths was fantastic news for the club, the rural town of Stawell and athletics, as it leads into the 134th running of the event.
“It has been a difficult few months for the SAC as we faced the possibility of holding the event without a Naming Rights partner for the first time since the 1970s,” Mr Skurrie said.
“While we are confident the event would have proceeded, we are now in the position to deliver the event at its highest level, continue with a live broadcast on Easter Monday, and even introduce a number of new elements to enhance the overall carnival experience both on and off the track.”
The 2015 Woolworths Stawell Gift takes place over the Easter long weekend from 3rd April – 6th April, with more than 10,000 spectators expected to attend the iconic athletics event in regional Victoria.
“The Naming Rights partnership brings together one of Australia’s iconic businesses with the nation’s most iconic athletics event,” Mr Skurrie said.
“To have a sponsor of Woolworth’s magnitude supporting the Stawell Gift is recognition of the importance of this famous event to Australians.”
Woolworths Head of Campaign Management Karen Madden said: “Woolworths is delighted to come on board as Naming Rights partner of this iconic event. Woolworths has been a proudly Australian company for more than 90 years, so to join with an event like the Woolworths Stawell Gift and feeding fresh talent is a perfect fit for us. We’re looking forward to a fantastic event this Easter.”
The Stawell Athletic Club has also secured other major partnerships with Carlton & United Breweries and Coca-Cola Amatil for the 2015 event, as well as the re-signing of Australia Post, State Government of Victoria and ASICS.

Under a new broadcast deal, the Woolworths Stawell Gift will be returning to its original home, the Seven Network, with a two and a half hour live telecast on Easter Monday followed by the final of the Woolworths Stawell Gift during the AFL pre-game telecast.
Seven Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin commented: “We’re absolutely rapt to be broadcasting another iconic Australian event. It will make for a brilliant day of Easter Monday sport for our viewers with the blockbuster Hawthorn versus Geelong match to follow the Stawell Gift.”
Minister for Sport John Eren MP said today’s announcements were fantastic news for the iconic event.
“It is exciting to see two iconic Australian brands combining with Australia’s most talented athletes to help deliver a bigger and better event for all to enjoy,” he said.
“Events like the Woolworths Stawell Gift attract a significant number of visitors to our state, boost the economy and increase participation in sport at a grassroots level. I would encourage all Victorians to get along to the 2015 Woolworths Stawell Gift.”

JACK HALE TO DON THE SASH AT STAWELL

Date: 18th March 2015

Tasmanian sprint sensation Jack Hale has confirmed he will compete in this year’s Woolworths Stawell Gift.
Hale, who is currently ranked the seventh fastest youth in the world according to the International Association Athletics Federations (IAAF), will be one of the youngest runners in the field as he competes against men of all ages to take out the iconic race.
The 16-year-old broke the national under-18 record for the 100m in Hobart last September and won the Under-18 100m & 200m sprints at the National Junior Athletic Championships over the weekend to secure a place at the World Youth Championships in Colombia in July.
Hale said he was honoured to be making his debut on the hallowed turf of Stawell’s Central Park this Easter.
“It is really big for me to be running at Stawell and something that I have been looking at over the past couple of years,” Hale said.
“It will be a really good experience for me to be competing against some of the veterans of pro-running. If I am one of the backmarkers I hope to run some of them down and also focus on running a good time.”
