Wow, I missed the release of the marks, how remiss of me. Here they are, who do you like? I think a couple of athletes who have shown some form will feature here. I missed the limit increase too, 12.5m now by looks.

jack hales mark is an insult. 2.75m at bay didnt even make final and is penalised 1.5m. I hope he doesnt even turn up

Halestorm has a hamstring strain and won't be attending.

Just confirming that although Jack Hale is out of the Ballarat Gift with a strained hamstring, the club is very pleased to confirm that Jack will be in attendance at Ballarat and will be the face of our 2 day carnival. He will be available for autographs and photos and will conduct a clinic at Ballarat Grammar School on Friday at 3.45pm.

I agree Halestorm.

Regardless of a hamstring or not. Jack Hale (off 2.75m) basically ran a trial for the Victorian handicapper at the Bay. Unlike Leon Burckhardt who had no previous big gift form to judge Jack Hale on before the Bay but still came up with a competitive mark, the Vic handicapper had the advantage of watching him in a major gift. He didn't make the Bay final, but he will meet other finalists worse off. Simply doesn't make sense.

But then again, the more I look at the Vic scene and see the same runners accumulating gift after gift, the more it appears that there is a safety first approach. There is very little of the flair & imagination we see at the Bay Sheffield that makes it so exciting & unpredictable.

Fit or not, it's my view that given the marks of several others, Jack Hale is uncompetitive off 1.25m.

'Flair' and 'imaginative' are qualities we want from our literary masters, not our handicappers.

I would think 'sensible', 'stable', and 'consistent with the guidelines' were far more important traits to exercise in this situation.

Concur with Halestorm.
1.25 is not sensible Dizzy no matter what spin you put on it.

Another gift for the front markers. Hignett to explode out of the blocks and never look like being caught

Houlihan won't be trying to win this one Auspro
But should win the 70 with his ridiculous mark

Talking about ridiculous 70m marks, Innes Wong off 6.25m? Everyone might as well not turn up for the Ballarat 70 and the Don Furness. Lazy 70m handicapping for the SAs.

Still not as good as your mark Lewie. you rascal.
Care sharing the rest of those Don Furness marks you know about?

The Don Furness is staying in Victoria. MARK my words!

Doesn't matter what they are. Look what happened the last time a Stawell Gift finalist had 6.25m in the Don. Shambles

I might not have been in the sport long enough because I thought the handicaps did matter. Silly me. I now realise no published marks doesn't matter. He will win anyway.

I thought you might have half a brain! No one knows what the handicaps are because no one knows who the back marker will be until entries close. Hence no one knows what the field pull will be considering the event is being handicapped from scratch, thereby not knowing the 'exact' handicaps. What we do know is Innes Wongs and Houlihans 70m marks relative to the field. And they are extremely generous for 2 runners that have shown form over the 2 biggest gifts in Aus. They have a guaranteed spot in the 70 final this weekend and in the Don.

Ryan Camille has won one major race, the Don Furness off 6m and Lewie thinks it's a shambles. Poor form Lewie begrudging Ryan his one decent win.
Hate to think what Lewie made of the Albury Gift won off 14m. and the womens 120m off 23.5!!!!!
Athletes make the most of a good mark, Get over it, Life goes on.
Talk about Ballarat. My tip Luke Houlihan

Did Innes-Wong or Houlihan get an adjustment to their 70m mark from last season. If so then no one has anything to complain about. Yes they both have generous marks but they still have to win it. Houlihan won't take this weekend, he'll wait till Stawell where he might have 8m!

22 Re: Ballarat Gift on Thu Feb 05, 2015 10:57 am

Lewie

There is no issue with the runner, you run off what you are given and if you beat the handicapper, kudos to you. However when an athlete has exposed form over the distance or similar, AS PER THE RULES, the handicapper has the discretion to determine an appropriate starting handicap. This has not been done over the 70m distance for these two athletes. Funny how there's a lot of complaints about their 120 marks but it's all hush hush about the 70m marks...

Lewie, to be fair, tell us what your marks are so we can compare? You seem ultra keen to see marks ripped back from others.

Better still - tell us what you have won and we can compare with wins of the two SA boys you keep harping on about.

There's More Hush hush about your marks Lewie?

My picks from times.
Stevens 12.38 from albury hard to beat
houlihan 12.40 from bay close
innes-Wong around 12.44 from stawell

Good call auspro.
From Albury Stevens looks best.
Based on Bay, Houlihan & Eschebach.
Innes-Wong meets them worse from Bay. But he can still final.

Eschebachs 12.57 at bay compare to houlihans 12.40. (Not to dissimilar to eddys 12.38 at bay) and eddy had field covered by 1m+ at mary

Eschebach was 2nd at Maryborough.

Innes-Wong 12.62 at Bay, back 0.75. Pushes it out to 12.7. Eschebach 12.57 keeps same Mark.

Houlihan 12.44 minus 0.25, say 12.48?
Houlihan has all Bay athletes covered.

Stevens heat at Albury can't be dismissed.

All quite from Lewie, the two SA boys must have him covered with the marks when it comes to the Don, that's why he's kicking up a fuss. Lewie, how about you get faster then It won't matter what anyone else has

-houlihan 12.404** (not 12.44). 0.25m back. Say 12.43? Into a head wind. hes looking at sub 12.40s

-innes-Wong HC to run 12.44 off his 12.29 from stawell (his best run. Not bay)

-eschebach HC to run 12.46 off his 12.19 (at stawell off 9.5 back 2.75 say 0.27) keeps same mark from mary running 12.49 & 12.52)

-stephens 12.38 WA albury.

Wat will the fronties run????? They seem to be getting the hits
