Athletes queue up for Gift carnival
Jan. 30, 2015, 10:30 p.m.

BALLARAT Athletic Club has been swamped with entries for next weekend’s Ballarat Gift Carnival.

Club representative Greg Whitecross said the $36,000 two-day meet had attracted a record 934 entries. “It’s a great response,” he said.

Tasmanian teenage sprint sensation Jack Hale headlines the 78 entries for the $16,000 Ballarat Gift, 120m.

Last year’s Gift winner, Nathan Riali, is returning, along with 2013 Stawell Gift winner Andrew Robinson, who was run out in the Gift heats last year from the tough mark of 2.75m.

Tasmania will have a strong contingent at the Eastern Oval, with Luke Whitney also joining Hale and Robinson.

Whitney, who reached the semi-finals last year, has had a strong start to the season in Tasmania with wins in the Rosebery and Latrobe Gifts at the end of last year.

Interstate visitors will also feature West Australian Bryce Teo, while Stawell Gift heat winner Luke Stevens will potentially be another contender.

The $5000 Ballarat Women’s Gift, 120m, will also have a strong interstate flavour, with Christine Wearne, of New South Wales, and West Coast’s  Kiara Reddingius joining Ballarat’s Jenna Cartledge, Tara Domaschenz and Holly Dobbyn among 53 entries.

Other big entries for the weekend carnival include: open 70m, 102; Intersport restricted 400m series heat, 70; under-20 70m, 69; women’s/masters 1600m handicap, 46; open 1600m, 51; backmarkers’ 400, 69; frontmarkers’ 400m, 96. Handicaps are expected to be released on Monday.

Great news. The return to last year's venue made the event so much better. Let's hope the weather comes to the party and we get a balmy twilight Saturday and sunny Sunday.

Forecast for 31 degrees Saturday and 34 Sunday... hold that thought please... Very Happy
