A SPRINTER who moved to the Gold Coast to reinvigorate his career has taken out the prestigious Australia Day Gift at Evandale.
Jordan Caldow, the son of a Jamaican father and Australian mother, landed the $3500 winner’s cheque in a frantic finish to the 120m Gift held on the lawns of the Gold Coast City Council’s headquarters.

There was less than a metre and a half separating the sprinters across the line, with the 21-year-old Caldow taking the purse just ahead of 2009 and 2010 winner Matt Davies and Ardyn Foy.

The victory was the result of plenty of hard work for Caldow, who two years ago had lost his running mojo and moved to the Gold Coast from Adelaide to be with coach Brett Robinson.

Robinson said Caldow was far from at his peak when he arrived in May, 2013.

“He ate his way through Adelaide and was pretty unfit when he came to me,’’ Robinson said.

But Robinson knew Caldow could run. He was, after all, the 2012 world beach sprint champion from the Glenelg club.

“Yes, I was pretty unfit and I had lost all my motivation, so I decided to move,” Caldow said.

“I didn’t actually put on that much weight but lost my fitness base for sure.”

A cracking run at QEII in Brisbane the previous weekend convinced Robinson and Caldow to have a go at the Gift.

Caldow ran a personal best 10.56 seconds for the 100m, so he was a late entry for the Gift, nominating for the event only on Wednesday.

The women’s 120m Gift was taken out by Nikki Venardos, from Mt Warren Park.

She finished ahead of Papua New Guinean Patricia Taea and 2014 winner Emma Yates from the Gold Coast.
