We turn our attention to Rye this week. Who do people think will take it out?

Tim Rooke off 4 a misprint? Results say he ran off 2.5 at Maryborough

I had seen that too sprintstar. Handy 1.5m lift if accurate. Won off less than that I think from memory.

Matt Carter to go back to back? Won in sizzling time last year off 2m - this 1.25. Or the training partner?

Carter only ran 12.89 adj at Maryborough off the same mark and Kelly only ran 13.09 adj at Maryborough and ran poor times at Daylesford so if either of these salute the stewards would have to become involved wouldn't they?

You would think that faster times than that would be required.

Mex, think about what you are suggesting. Should stewards really be worried if Matt Carter or Bros
Kelly run close at Rye, after being ordinary at Maryborough?

Who let's go Maryborough for Rye?

The Rye track always suits guys like Carter & Kelly. The stewards should look at it from a practical viewpoint, some runners perform better on faster decks.

If Carter & Kelly run better at Rye, the last thing you can factor in is they pulled up at Maryborough. They were off their running and that sometimes just happens!

Difficult conditions face athletes again this weekend. The main chances according to the poll are  Tim Rooke, Robert Spencer, Dale Lyons/Stuart Rooke, Matthew Harvey/Simon Carey, Darren Whittaker/Paul Hughes, Todd Ireland/Kelly Sheldrick.

Tim Rooke 3m (9 votes) Tim has only 3m not 4m as shown. Having won Bendigo off 3.5m, he could be somewhere around a mark that could make him competitive. We saw at Maryborough that he is far from ready to go though.

Robert Spencer 7.5m (13 votes) Robert ran well in the Maryborough final without managing to get over Eddy. As mentioned last week, he won Bendigo and should be right in this contest. I would expect him to make the final.

Dale Lyons 9m / Stuart Rooke 9m (7 votes) Dale has been knocking at the door for a while now and showed some form at Stawell last year. Is it too early for him to go off? S Rooke made the Northcote 70m final off 3.5m. Runners off tighter 70m marks generally don't have as big a mark in the gift. He won the Maryborough restricted off 8.25m in a time of 12.66 adj which suggests that he should be right in the mix.

Matthew Harvey 9.75m / Simon Carey 10m (11 votes) Carey has not shown form over the gift distance, the votes are likely for Harvey. Harvey made the Maryborough final and may be looking to pick up something like Rye before building again. Expect him to be in the final as well and right in the lunge for the line.

Darren Whittaker 12.25m / Paul Hughes 13.5m (12 votes) Hughes is an interesting runner as he always gives everything he has, or at least appears to. I think this may be too tight for him and the votes are more for Whittaker. Whittaker ran well at Maryborough and will likely final here as well. Dynamite off the blocks, the likes of Harvey, Rooke and Spencer will need to remain clam and not try to chase him. Definite chance.

Todd Ireland 14.25m / Kelly Sheldrick 14.5m (7 votes) Interesting votes here, maybe a few speculative votes for a couple of veterans out in front. Ireland has not run many gifts recently while Sheldrick was a chance last year before injury hit him. As with any veteran runners, they are dangerous if feeling good on the day, you could throw Mair in that mix too. I think that these two would be doing well to make the semis.

Possible finalist in no particular order, Spencer, Harvey, S Rooke, Whittaker, Mair, Tancredi, Eddy, Hignett. Dark horse for the final, Ware.

Good luck
