Toby Schreier's funeral to be held at SANTOS Stadium on Monday 10th November

We are all sadddened by the passing of Toby Schreier last Saturday morning following a short battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Toby attended his last athletic carnival on Sunday 26th October. Fittingly it was the Flinders Athletic Club's SAAL meet. Toby was in a wheelchair and weighed about 45kg but he did his best to accept the well wishers who were happy to see the master coach attend the meet and watch his charge, young Jacob Cocks finis h third in the 3200m.

Toby founded the Flinders Athletic Club in 1979 and for the next 35 years dedicated his life to the club and the development of many of South Australia's best distance athletes. He coached numerous state and national champions and Australian representatives.

He was a Life member of the SA Athletic League, Athletics SA, Flinders Athletic Club and the Mitchell Park Little Athletics Club. He was an original inductee into the Bay Sheffield Hall of Fame having coached over 40 winners of the various races at the Bay including an unprecedented ten winners in the Bay Sheffield select 1600m. Toby has been an ASA Coach of the year recipient and was awarded Coach of the Year by the Australian Athletic Confederation in 1989.

He played at SANFL level with Sturt having played under legendary coach Jack Oatey and was later a coach at Sturt in the 1970's.

Athletes coached by Toby included national champions, national reps and state champions like Alan Carmon, Peter Brett, David Graham, Darren Abbott, Brett Cartwright, Shane Thiele, Bradley Case, Nik Howarth, Robert Killmier & Adam Bishop.

It's no coincidence that the deterioration of Toby's health has coincided with Flinders AC's own struggles to retain members and remain one of the stronger clubs in SA athletics. With Toby at the helm, Flinders was a dominant force in SA athletics, particularly in middle distance running. I recall some of the state titles over 1500m and 5000m being dominated by blue singlets.

Toby's legacy is the Flinders Athletic Club and all the athletes who have been a part of that club over the last 35 years. Let's hope the club can draw on the enormous sacrifice and dedication of Toby Schreier to get it back to being one of the top clubs in SA.

Toby Schreier's funeral will be held at SANTOS Stadium, Railway Terrace, Mile End on Monday 10th November at 2.00pm.

In lieu of floral tributes, the family requests a donation to the Motor Neurone Disease Association of SA Inc. PO Box 2087 Hilton Plaza SA 5033.
