Gold Coast Turf Club’s bikini race is here to stay after Summer Surf Sprint scoops award

BIKINIS, budgie smugglers and bolters are the judges’ choice after the Gold Coast Turf Club and Queensland Athletic League were awarded the Australian Athletics Confederation Carnival of the Year.

The inaugural Summer Surf Sprint race day, which featured a $30,000 prize pool, was given the nod of approval for its uniquely Gold Coast take on an athletic event, which included a controversial “bikini race”.

Queensland Athletic League president Bruce Duncan said he was surprised to get the award — beating out prestigious athletics events such as the Stawell Gift in Victoria.

“We thought we might have had a very outside chance,” Duncan said.

“I think the bikini race was what got us over the line.

Model Melissa Kelly of Broadbeach won the women’s bikini race at the Gold Coast Turf Club.

“It was something out of the ordinary and certainly got a large crowd down there.”

The $2000 race was taken out by 28-year-old Broadbeach model and Queensland lingerie football player Melissa Kelly.

The event also attracted some of the fastest runners in the country for the $10,000 120m gift which was won by Gold Coaster and Commonwealth Games athlete Dylan Grant.

Gold Coast Turf Club chairman Brett Cook said he planned to bring the controversial event back bigger and better this summer.

“Obviously there was a bit of controversy to have the bikini race. As far as I’m concerned, bikinis and the Gold Coast come hand in hand,” Cook said.

Gold Coast Turf Club chairman said the race would be back this summer, with bikinis and the Gold Coast going hand in hand.

“We are looking to put in more prize money and having a much larger emphasis this year.

“It is great to win the award in our first year and we hope to make it a large and annual event for years to come.”

The Summer Surf Sprint race day would run in conjunction with four Arabian horse races as well as the normal eight-race program.
