Track and field brigade ready for Ipswich winter carnival

David Lems
Queensland Times
5th Jul 2014

THE region's major athletics competition is fast approaching with proven performers and promising up-and-comers expected to line up.

This year's August 17 event will be the 33rd Ipswich Athletics Winter Carnival at Bill Paterson Oval.

The Sunday program also features the 25th running of the 120m Lightning Gift.

Athletes can nominate for the non-prizemoney events on the Queensland Athletics website at www.qldathletics.

Those wanting to contest the professional gift races for men and women need to complete a registration form available on the Ipswich athletics website at

The main events on the day are the Lightning Gift and 100m Ladies Gift.

Heats start on Sunday morning with finals in the afternoon.

A range of track and field events are also scheduled from 10am.

Nominations close on August 11.

Ipswich and District Athletic Club president Vic Pascoe said the carnival heralded the start of a new season, providing ideal competition for those returning from off-season breaks or keen to measure their progress.

It's also suitable for school athletes preparing for regional and state championships later this year.

"It's a good opportunity, especially those under 18, to have a run," he said.

The gift races have traditionally attracted leading handicap runners from around the state.

"We usually get 45 runners for one race," Pascoe said, rating the Lightning Gift the highlight of the day.

Among up-and-coming Ipswich and District Athletic Club competitors are sprinter Lizzy Melrose and high jumper Joel Walk, who is also with the Ipswich Little Athletics Centre.

Thrower Tyla Stolberg and hurdler Ella Milford are younger Ipswich representatives on the rise.

A number of other multi-talented representatives from the award-winning Ipswich Little Athletics Centre are expected to contest the diverse range of events on offer.

Pascoe welcomed people willing to help on the day and sponsors to support the major competition.

Those able to assist on the day can contact Alex Canavan on 0409 734 864 or email

Sponsors can call treasurer Greg Parnell on 0408 858 551.

All monies raised go to purchasing new equipment and giving regional athletes an opportunity to compete at national and international meets.
