Interesting to see Simon Wells have 1 run off 7m at Euroa then get a lift of 1.5m for stawell and has a 11.19 pb and is also Alan Wells son.

Is it an April Fool's joke a week late? Surely these are not the proper marks? Inconsistencies all over the place. Novice mark is 6 but there's many first time visitors on random marks up to 9.
Please point out what VAL meets Eckford/Agbaleti/Swindels ran at?

Jacob Despard from Tasmania had 7 last year but for some reason he has 3.75 this year even though he has not won anything in pro athletics. Is he being judged on a 10.63 run at the Australian Junior Championships and if so why is the handicapper so harsh with giving Jacob a 3.25 meter pull on him as he had a time of 10.75 prior to Stawell last year and still had 7 metres?

Despard has been hammered for being honest. Back 3.25m is crazy. Consider the Stawell Gift winner walked away with 40 grand and has won another 4k since and he's back 3.75m. Despard meets the Stawell Gift winner 0.50m worse off. Despard should have a mark around 5.25m. Back 1.75m from last year would have been fair.
I forgot Tassie is only allowed a Stawell Gift winner every 70 years. So Despard has to wait his turn.  tongue

Probably worth remembering the field was up 2 metres for last year's gift because of Powell, so the pull for his PB is probably 1.25.

The handicap system looks after those that race here, as last year's winner has done on several occasions this season.

Not trying to justify anything as I'm no longer responsible, just stating the facts. (so don't shoot the messenger)

Jacob despard I feel has been pulled .at ballarat because he ran12.836 in heat second to Versace

a rate of 8.94 metres per second a month later he runs 10.63 metres per second his age just over 17 years at this rate he would have ran about 12.2 then you have to adjust for conditions??? their are other runners who came back in marks for am races and I suppose others have gone out with lacklustre runs

their are too many runners now competing in amateur races to give a false view of ability

Williams last before Stawell about 10.6 after Stawell 10.25 to mention all would take a lot of pages, I have looked at a lot of runners at all athletics .com it is very interesting times recorded up to 5-6 years ago are they past their prime or marking time , cyclops  Razz  Shocked

The field in last year's Stawell Gift was up by an average of 1.75m. Despard's mark is incredibly harsh considering other runners with PB's of around 10.69 to 10.79 are in front, some by over 2m.
Seriously does anyone here think Despard has any hope in hell off 3.75m???????  scratch

Was that crickets I could hear in the background????

Elk, not entering into this one way or the other just on one fact alone a lot of others would like to have won the nothing that you stated ie:Last years Burnie Gift. Obviously you don't rate it?

Hi JH,
Why then did the handicapper not penalise Jacob on last years Burnie Gift win for Stawell in 2013 as that win was over 2 months before Jacob received his 7 metre handicap?

I'm definatly not here to justify or read the handicappers mind, maybe he had a memory loss as others seem to have had.

Split the Gift entries into different  groups based on handicaps and put them head to head I think we can find some finalists.

Less than 4.0m
Matt CARTER 1.25
Jake HAMMOND 1.50
Andrew James McCABE 2.00
Jordan CALDOW 2.50
Alex CAREW 3.00
Lee FORREST 3.00
Luke STEVENS 3.50
Nathan RIALI 3.50
Andrew ROBINSON 3.50
Gary FINEGAN 3.50
Jacob DESPARD 3.75
Matthew WILTSHIRE 3.75

I don’t think there’s anyone in good enough form, (in 10.45 shape or better), behind 4.0 who can make the final.
Stevens the best of them.

The next group. 4.0 to 4.75.
Ben MISPELHORN 4.00
Ryan BEDFORD 4.00
Brendan COLE 4.00
Jesse USOALII 4.25
Sam JAMIESON 4.75
The stand out is Sam Jamieson on 4.75. Bedford and Usoalii have run very quick this year but I think we can bank on Jamieson to be the best of this group.

Next group. 5.0 to 5.75.
Ben MITCHELL 5.00
Keita Bangalie 5.00
Jordan CSABI 5.25
James VINE 5.25
Chris BAILLIEU 5.50
Ty CHAPMAN 5.50
Bradley EDWARDS 5.50
David AFATH 5.50
Matthew HARGREAVES 5.50
Brandon GALIC 5.50
Dean SCARFF 5.50
Carl MOREHOUSE 5.50
Timothy DELAHUNTY 5.50
Rod WAINWRIGHT 5.50
Joshua McCABE 5.50
Evan O’HANLON 5.75
Christian FOSTER 5.75

There’s some good chances in this group. In a head between Csabi and Vine I think Vine’s experience wins out. I think the best of the guys on 5.50 are Afath and Scarff. Afath has a 10.84 and was 3rd at Stonnington. I think he just beats Scarff.
So the best chances here are Vine, Afath and then Scarff.

Vine 3rd last year and hasn’t shown much, which might indicate waiting for Stawell. Not sure if he can give Afath a start tho.

Next group 6.00 to 6.75
Thomas Moloney 6.00
Kevin BRITTAIN 6.00
Benjamin FARRELL 6.00
Ted BELCHER 6.00
Jake SANDERS 6.00
Bryce TEO 6.00
Max BELCHER 6.00
Laurent STEWART 6.25
Iain DOUGLAS 6.25
Will JOHNS 6.25
Maxim Mishchenko 6.25
Jackson Miller-Gage 6.25
Brendan MATTHEWS 6.25
Samuel BAIRD 6.50
Daniel POP 6.50
Shaun HARGREAVES 6.50
Nick MACGIBBON 6.50
Jack NEWMAN 6.50
Thomas Yeung 6.50
Jasper Nettlefold 6.50
Henry NWOSU 6.75
Ben WEAVER 6.75
James CIBICH 6.75
Darcy LAHEY 6.75

24 athletes in this group.
Start with the guys off 6.0. Teo the best from Brittain. But I doubt either can final.
6.25. This is a head to head between Matthews and Douglas. Hard to pick, both chances to final. Just go for Matthews as he’s been here before and has better 120m form.
6.50. I like Sam Baird tho not sure if he’s playing footy just yet. Still think he might be hope to do well at Stawell. Nick MacGibbon not quite ready for this but I expect him to make the semis.
6.75. Weaver under a new coach Vs Cibich, 3rd at the Bay off 7.0. Weaver has the better Stawell record, so stick with the Dream.

Best one from this group is Matthews, followed by Douglas, Weaver & Baird.

Next group 7.0 to 7.75

Tim ESCHEBACH 7.00
Tjimarri SANDERSON 7.00
Max PUNCHIHEWA 7.00
David TINNEY 7.00
Stuart BAINBRIDGE 7.00
Corey BAKER 7.00
William Mills 7.00
Sam DICK 7.00
Jake MISPELHORN 7.00
Hamish ADAMS 7.00
Conor LOUGHNAN 7.00
Thomas Farmer 7.00
Murray Goodwin 7.00
Jarred GILROY 7.00
Ben SYRUS 7.00
Alex SALIU 7.25
Chris HARGREAVES 7.25
Daniel WHITE-ALIKAKOS 7.25
Cameron MOSS 7.25
Ryan SCHMIDT 7.25
Jack ARMOUR 7.25
Mathew CURRIE 7.25
Robert SPENCER 7.50
Paul CRACROFT-WILSON 7.50
Quentin WALKER 7.50
Daniel Steinhauser 7.50
Tom NEWMAN 7.50
Luke HOULIHAN 7.50
Kristerfer Kardakovski 7.50
Dylan PANIZZA 7.50
Tom PAAVOLA 7.75
Jordan TRONNOLONE 7.75
Luke WHITNEY 7.75
Luke STORTA 7.75
Liam SHEPHERD 7.75
David Mitchell 7.75

15 guys on 7.0. Best of them are Eschbach, Sanderson-Milera, Tinney, Gilroy.
Eschback was in the final last year off 9.50. Sanderson Milera was in the semis off 9.75 and4th at Bay off 7.50. Milera has run 10.92 this year. Tinney and Gilroy haven’t done enough this year. Milera is the best of the 7.0 guys.

Cam Moss is the best of the 7.25 runners.

Rob Spencer is the stand out of the 7.50 runners and the best of all the guys in the 7 to 7.75 group. Panizza is a Bay finalists and Houlihan won the Bay Restricted but Spencer has them covered.

Luke Whitney the best of the 7.75 runners.

Of the 36 runners between 7.0 to 7.75, I like Spencer from Whitney, Moss and Milera.

Next group 8.0 to 8.75.
Stuart ABERDEIN 8.00
Isaac DUNMALL 8.00
Rhys GILLSON 8.00
John ADAMS 8.00
Cam DUNBAR 8.00
Jayden Gilfillan 8.00
Vincent JASON 8.00
JONATHAN DYKES 8.00
Luke Eckford 8.00
Bryce SWINDELLS 8.00
Liam PROCACCINO 8.25
William KERR 8.25
Augustine CARTY-COWLING 8.50
Nathan DIXON 8.50
Edward WARE 8.50
Jake KELLAR 8.50
Paul TANCREDI 8.50
Simon WELLS 8.50
Leigh MILLER 8.50
Andrew CAMPBELL 8.75
Christopher INNES-WONG 8.75
Douglas GREENOUGH 8.75
Matthew EDDY 8.75
Nathan McNAB 8.75

24 runners in this group.
8.0. Dunbar Vs Adams. I don’t think Dunmall can beat either Adams or Dunbar. Just think Dunbar is going better than Adams, but not much in it.
8.25 to 8.50. Carty-Cowling is the Gift favourite and looks the best chance. Ed Ware struggles with the 120m at Stawell.
8.75. Greenough loves Stawell. Already been in two finals. May not be going well enough to final. But has these covered.

Carty-Cowling from Dunbar and Adams.

Next group 9.0 to 9.75.
Jason BAILEY 9.00
Rilyn MOSBEY 9.00
Michael VOUMARD 9.00
Bikramjeet SINGH 9.00
Nathan FOX 9.00
Koffi AGBALETI 9.00

Dean DOBRIC 9.25
Daniel LEMOTO 9.25
Adrian BURKE 9.25
Lachlan TAYLOR 9.50
Simon JACKSON 9.50
Shane EZARD 9.50
Simon FITZPATRICK 9.50
Ryan CAMILLE 9.75
Jarrad DARTNALL 9.75
David GROSS 9.75

21 runners, might be a finalist amongst them.
11 of them on 9.0m.Agbaletti has a good mark for a Queenslander who hasn’t been here before. He made the final at a QAL meet earlier this season. Singh is a 70m specialist who might be stretched in this. Tiu has been here before and should run around 12.3. Ross is a very good veteran runner and should go well in the heat. Probably Tiu the best of them.
Of the other 10, Jackson, Fitzpatrick, Camille and Gross look the best. Camille smashed them in the Don Furness and will be looking to make the final again. He’s back 2.25 but he was a long way in front of most of them. Jackson hasn’t looked as good as last year. Fitzpatrick lacks early speed but will be coming at them at the end.

Overall, I like Camille, Fitzpatrick and Tiu.

10.0.
Shane WOODROW 10.00
Noddy ANGELAKOS 10.00
Ryan HOFFMAN 10.00

Daniel CARMAN 10.00
Martin HORNE 10.00
Mark HIGNETT 10.00
William LITTLE 10.00
Dale LYONS 10.00

31 runners on 10.0.
I think there might be one finalist in this group.  Best of them are Woodrow, Versace, O’Dwyer, Hicks & Lyons.
Woodrow won the VRTA 200m back in November but hasn’t done much since. I get the feeling he might be waiting for Stawell. He was just beaten in his semi last year by Eschbach. Versace has no Gift form since 2005, but he can run as he showed in a few 400’s.
O’Dwyer might not have the legs any more but he always runs well at Stawell. Hicks ran a quick heat at Ballarat and Lyons ran 2nd in the Bill Howard last year. Only thing against Lyons is he has no Gift form and never won a race. But like his stablemate Camille in 2013, he might be aiming to make a Stawell final.

Lyons just from Woodrow.

So in summary:
Jamieson
Afath
Matthews
Spencer
Carty-Cowling
Camille
Lyons

Athletic Observations

I watched a ballarat gift winner make a final at ringwood on the weekend over the 100m. Another 5m further and he would of won. Off 3.5m still think he could make a final as he moves better on grass.
Others i Like are Asafth, Carty Cowling Lyons Camile and Jamieson with the later going to Win his second for me.

Good Luck to All.
