With Bendigo the traditional Caulfield Cup of the VAL run and won, leaving only Burramine the McKinnon left as a lead into Stawell which of course is the Melbourne Cup of the VAL, I'd like to pose the following questions......

1. Who are the chances?
2. Who are the hopefuls?
3. Who are the dreamers?

Some genuine chances have decided they didn't want to wait for Stawell, these include Forrest, Stevens, Riali and now Spencer.

But whose left waiting, whose left hoping and whose left dreaming!

MTR has one local and one interstates picked out which I'll be keeping under my hat and will be punting come Easter weekend.

Good luck to all over the next 6 weeks, trained hard and race easy!

MTR after watching the YGTS videos (thanks again Youngy) of bendigo and now reading your post here, Vlad's display of powerful running reminded me of one recent caulfield cup performance!!! The horses were left flat footed and the jockeys would have thought OMG I have been torn a new one here

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PLoSeZVVneQ&autoplay=1

Geez that video still gets the heart going, what a run!

For those who don't follow horseracing and based on MTRs post what happened next was pretty special as well!!

Video two- http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vLM7l3Oihvo&autoplay=1

Methinks Spencer waited for Stawell until he lost his shit and ran a blinder in the Bendigo 1000 semi. That was the OMFG moment of the season. Hippo game plan was going along perfectly until then. Like a scene from the old Batman series, WHACK, BAM, KAPOW! Best thing to do was to take it. And he did. Even with the meter pull. Rob looks a certain Stawell finalist. Would have scared the crap out of a few eastern suburb boys!

WhataboutmeMrHandicapper you don't have either of my selections in your top 12 picks, suggest you look a little harder! Both my selections have run in the VAL this year!!

Vicinsider, you've posted link to Caulfield Cup twice, suggest you meant to post M&P's Caulfield & Melbourne Cup runs? If so, does that mean you're tipping Spencer to take 1m penalty and still win Stawell? Tough ask, would need to be pretty talented, unfortunately Spencer falls into the dreamer category now, and will do so for life!!!

As WhataboutmeMrHandicapper suggested, everything was going beautifully for Spencer until he torn the boys from Eastern suburbs a newie in his semi final!!!!

Now all the chances, hopefuls and dreamers are left wondering if there is another Spencer out there ready to unleash the same dose of reality come Easter weekend?

Guess we'll wait and see??

Orright MTR, at least give us a hint. The interstater, are we looking north or east of Victoria?

This Stawell 12 is dynamic, might change again after Burramine.

Up at Bend-igo,
Watching the10 heats of the Gift made me smile,
And I knew if you want to be a chance,
At Easter in the big Stawell dance,
You have to hold back for a little more while.

But Sunday made us shiver,
With what we saw Semi 2 deliver,
Us Hippo boys began to sweat,
AS the yellow flew with every step.

He’s fucked it now, came the cry,
Our disappointment was hard to hide,
Something said to us deep inside,
The day our Stawell chances  -died.

Chorus
So bye bye, did Robbies chances go bye,
Ran the Bendigo Thousand, and in the semi let fly,
Us Hippo boys choked on our whiskey & dry,
AS the with every one of Rob’s big strides,
Our Stawell chances fucken nose dived!!!
(Repeat)

It's definitely not east of Vic, did you mean west?

Both my local hope and interstate hope are in northern regions!

That's all your getting from me WhataboutmeMrHandicapper, you can work out the rest if study long and hard or have been watching closely! I've already given another clue in my previous post?

Btw Sheik, love your work, had me in stitches!

(To the tune - I'm a believer)

I thought Nick was talking fairy tales,
Stawell for someone else but not for me,
Sam was out to get me,
That's the way it seemed,
Disappointment haunted my Stawell dreams.

It's just not my race, I'm second banana,
To Jammo, I'll be running behind,
Can't win off 8 and a quarter,
Coulda won Ballarat if I tried.

I thought I was going to Stawell for the win,
Turns out I'm there to back up Sam,
What's the use in tryin'?
It's a hard lesson to learn,
Gotta wait another year,
For my fucken turn.

It's just not my race, I'm second banana,
Not a trace of doubt in my mind,
Had my chance, like Ben Weaver,
Coulda won Stonnington if I tried.

Well I'm going to ruin your odds for you. The interstater is Dean Scarff. 12.5 at maryborough then not seen. Not too sure about the local from northern suburbs yet

GuessWho, clearly picked up my first clue to pick Scarff, nice work his definitely a chance, but not my man!

As for local it really wasn't that hard to work out, keep it under wraps GuessWho as he'll be juicy enough odds that we can all get a good piece of the action!!

Scaff seems to have consistently run ~10.8 pace over the years (i.e. to win Queanbeyan a few years back and in the semi's at Stawell last year) and having observed him run 2 weeks ago I'd say he's in the similar shape (maybe 10.7). From his mark, that puts him optimistically at about 12.2 for Stawell.....is that enough?? has he improve beyond past performances?? guess time will tell.

Can someone please explain to me, how can an athlete make 13 gift finals this season (top 4 in 11 of them), and still have gained 1 metre in his handicap? More than almost any other athlete going around.

Also, this athlete was fined 2 weeks ago for an unacceptable performance, and now gets a 0.25 lift after coming top 4 in both gifts since. This can't be right?

Looking at the Euroa gift field Cam Dunbar must win it if he starts. He owns this field. Fitzpatrick for 2nd. Quinella pays $2.00.

I'll make 500 Finals
(To the tune of I'd walk 500 miles by the Proclaimers)

When I line up
Yeah, I know I’m going to be I’m going to be the man who lines up next to you,
When I run fourth,
I know I’ll be the man I’ll be the man that runs fourth next to you
And when I run third
I know I’ll be the man, I’ll be the man that runs third next to you
And when I’m runner-up
I know I’ll be the man, I’ll be the man that gave the race to you.

And I will make 500 finals
And I will make 500 more.
To protect my mark, and get a tick that might get me another quarter or more,
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar.

And when I’m walking,
Through a heat, a semi, a final, I’m walking next to you,

And the prizemoney,
Can’t eat sashes, I’m racking up the money with my placings next to you

And when I get home,
The wife says “Stick the sash, I want the prizemoney or I won’t sleep with you,

So I won’t win,
I’ll just keep making finals, finish second and leave all the winning up to you.

And I will make 500 finals
And I will make 500 more.
If I can keep it up for another year I might end up on nine or more
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar.
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar.
Dudududunbar,dududunbar, dudududududududududunbar.

And I will make 500 finals
And I will make 500 more.
If I can keep it up for two more years, I might end up on ten or more,
Dudududunbar.

That is absolute gold! Your best one yet Sheik. So so true. The only man in Australian athletics making a profit. Sashes not important.

Now jokes aside, how can this happen? Surely defeats the idea of pro running to have a guy in every single gift final whilst getting lifted still

Luke Stevens wins another!

Inspirational..........for my next song!
(No disrespect JH, just a good storyline for a song.)

(To the tune of Rod Stewart's classic Maggie Mae)

Wake up Henry, I think I've got something to say to you,
It's late in April, It's Friday morning and we're up at Stawell,
Now you've got me all confused
Cos I feel like I've been used
Oh Henry, I wish I'd waited - for Stawell
From the first meet I've just gone bang,
When you made me win at Terang
I'm now on three and a half and that’s what really hurts

I reckon you should have known better for a man who's 70 years of age,
Cos I hung on every word and thought you knew everything
I could have backed myself on the tote
But now they think we're just a joke
Oh Henry, I wish I'd waited - for Stawell,
The question is plain to me,
Is why I won bloody All-bur-ee,
I'm at Stawell with no chance and that's a pain I can do without

All I needed was a coach to lend a guiding hand
But I turned into a runner that won and won until you wore me out
Now my chances at Stawell are dead
And now I feel like a bloody dick-head
Oh Henry, we coud've waited for a few months more
Cos you wanted all that cash
I'm no chance for the Stawell Gift sash
I won't win a heat, no matter how hard I try

I supose I could have waited and not run til Stawell
But those pesky stewards wouldn't have wanted that at all,
They would have chased me like a hawk
And called me up to have a talk
Oh Henry, I'd wished you saved me for this race,
You made a first class sprinter of me
And I'm as fast as I wish to be
But I'm here at Stawell and I've no chance anyway,

TERANG -  I wish I'd, Never won that race
WARRNAMBOOL -  I wish I'd, Never won that race
BURNIE -  I wish I'd, Never won that race
ALBURY -  I wish I'd, Never won that race
EUROA - I wish I'd, Never won that race
HENRY -  I wish I'd, WAITED FOR THIS RACE!
