Sally Pearson fired up for 100m record attempt in Adelaide this weekend

A FIRED up Sally Pearson can break the Australian 100m record in Adelaide on Saturday if wind conditions suit, Athletics Australia head coach Eric Hollinsworth says.

Hollinsworth says Olympic champion Pearson would be privately seething at her loss to ACT sprinter and new Australian 100m record holder Melissa Breen last weekend.

He expected her to make a statement at the Adelaide Track Classic at Santos Stadium.

Breen broke Melinda Gainsford-Taylor’s 20-year-old 100m national record in the heats of the ACT Athletics Championships in Canberra last Saturday, clocking 11.11 sec.

She then clocked 11.15 sec in the final and got the better of Pearson (11.27sec).

It was the first race Pearson had lost to a fellow Australian in nine years.

“I’ve got to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sally took that record in either Adelaide or Perth over the next fortnight if the conditions are favourable,’’ Hollinsworth said.

“If you guys in Adelaide produce a 1.5m tailwind then it could happen.

“She’s a competitive person and Mel has beaten her which creates good healthy competition, and that’s when you get fast times and records being broken.”

Pearson will use national series races in Adelaide and Perth this month to tune up for the World Indoor Athletics Championship in Poland, where she will attempt to defend her 60m hurdles title.

Adelaide fans will not be treated to a repeat of last weekend’s Breen-Pearson showdown with Breen snubbing the event in favour of a local meet in WA.

Breen was unhappy after competing in Adelaide last year because officials did not honour a promise to run the 100m in the opposite direction if necessary to ensure a tail wind.

Athletics SA CEO Adam Bishop said the wind was swirling on the night and they decided not to switch the direction of the race based on wind readings taken prior to the race.

“It was no one’s fault,’’ he said.

He promised officials would switch the direction of Saturday’s race if necessary to ensure Pearson a tailwind in her record attempt.

Bishop said pre-ticket sales had been strong due to the hype surrounding Pearson’s appearance and he hoped for a bumper crowd.

Other highlights of the meet included the women’s javelin where Olympic silver medallist Kim Mickle will be one of three top 10 world ranked throwers competing.

Queenslander Alana Boyd will attempt a national women’s pole vault record.
