Short and sweet victory for Hansen

BY PHIL EDWARDS
31 Dec, 2010

TALENTED Launceston teenage distance runner Jimmy Hansen again confirmed his promising future by taking out the Devonport men's 800-metre race last night.

The 17-year-old Fay Denholm runner backed up from winning the Latrobe Carnival mile on Boxing Day to add another title to his Australian All-Schools 1500m crown claimed in Melbourne earlier this month.

Hansen ran strongly off a mark of 50m to cross the line ahead of Westbury's Jerome Whiteley, who won the Devonport mile the night before, with South Australian James Boden third in a smart time of 1 minute and 45.60 seconds.

Hansen won a bronze medal in the 800m at the All-Schools.

He was the Tasmanian Athletic League best first-year runner and best distance runner last year.

"That felt pretty sweet because it was a shorter distance," Hansen said after last night's win.

"I had to push myself really hard to get that one and it felt great."

Hansen said he was happy with his good form in the carnival series this year after having limited success at the smaller carnivals last year.

"It's just putting in the hard work and training harder and harder," he said as the reason for his improved form.

"Luckily I'm getting some reward for the effort I've put in."

Hansen will run in the mile at Burnie tomorrow before turning his focus toward the national championships in March next year.

SOUTH Australian Brigid Connolly
took out the women's 800m final from Hobart's Amy Pedder and Bruny Island's Michelle Davis.

The 21-year-old from Whyalla and coached by Toby Schrier ran second behind Victorian Tabitha West in the Devonport Gift and continued her good form to win off a mark of 55m.

"It's my first time at the carnivals and I'm loving it and Tasmania as well," Connolly said.

POLE-VAULTER James Filschie proved he can run fast as well as jump by winning the invitation 50m skins sprints from Australian 100m champion Melissa Breen and another Victorian pole-vaulter in national decathlon champion Steve Cain. Former Launceston runner Angela Phillips won the 300m masters.
