1 Women's 120m Heat Selections on Thu Dec 26, 2013 9:39 pm

Coopers 120m Women's Gift heats & tips.

First two in each heat advance to the semis.

Heat 1
Quite a few chances: Red Tamara Hamond 6.0, White Moa Engstrom 8.0, Blue Katherine Robb 9.50, Black Lauren Buchanan 12.75.

Others are Round, Harmston & Ellis.

17yo Engstrom has gone back 1.0m for winning at Port Adelaide on debut. She should never have had 9.0 to in her first start, so 8.0 is fair and gives her a chance to qualify albeit in a tough heat. Buchanan looked pretty good, making the final at Brighton. K Robb has a luxury mark for her ability & should be in this with a huge chance, but hard to gauge what her 120 form is like. Hamond might be close enough to cause some damage here as she has won races off a lot less than 6.0 in the VAL.

Hamond from Buchanan.

Heat 2
Another heat with many chances. The two WA girls at the back - Red April Brough 6.0 & White Gemma Grigg 7.50 might have their work cut out. The Blue Lauren Edwards 9.50 looks a certainty to qualify after having fastest up by over 2m at Brighton. Green Lucy Buckley 12.00 & Pink Hettie Driscoll 15.00 ran similarly at Brighton look like battling for 2nd although Brough & Grigg won't be far out of it.

Edwards & Buckley.

Others are A Robb & Thiele.

Heat 3
Black Katie Jury 12.50 looks the logical choice in this heat after running a solid 4th at Brighton where she ran a close 2nd in the semi to Hayley Openshaw.

The Blue Czenya Cavouras 9.50 should be massive chance for the final but seems to have gone off the boil this season.

Others are Schwass, Foster, Jinks, Boustead & Bateman. Of these maybe Boustead could get through if Cavouras fails to fire.

Go with
Jury & Cavouras

Heat 4
This is a tough heat with Red Katie Moore 4.75 chasing down White Melanie Purkiss 6.50 & Green Ali Trewartha 11.75.

Others are Tremaine, Reddingius, Meich & McMahon.

Trewartha was 2nd at Brighton & may have too much ground on Moore who will be motoring home. Purkiss won't be far out of it.

Trewartha & Moore

Heat 5
Red Leanne Hodge 4.00 comes into this after getting a huge lift. She might be close enough to the Blue Hayley Orman 8.75 to cause an upset. The White Emma Johnson 6.50 has won off tight marks in the VAL, but hasn't any recent results to suggest she can upset Hodge & Orman.

Others are Neophytou, Macolino, Atkins & Monks.

Hodge & Orman

Heat 6
Race favourite in the Green Hayley Openshaw 11.25 looks a certainty in this. She should win well with  Red Alicia Wrench-Doody 2.25 to just beat Black Zoe Kennedy 12.00 for 2nd. The Blue Bridgid Connolly has got a decent lift in the last 12 months but hasn't any recent 120m form to suggest she can cause an upset.

Others are Anderson, Evans, McDonough & Cusenza.

Heat 7
Lithgow Flash winner in the Red Christine Wearne 1.75 is very tightly marked here but she is in PB shape. Black Natasha Inglis 12.00 has been flying over 70 & should be a long way in front at the half way mark. Expect the Yellow Alice Platten 9.75 to be right in it at the finish & may be too strong.

Others are Ng, Speirs, Smith, Brown & Schrapel.

Platten & Inglis

Heat 8
Brighton winner in the Pink Yasmin Openshaw 13.00 looks a clear winner in this heat. White Lynette Mattingly 6.50 should take 2nd in a heat lacking the depth of others. Red Piranee Steinert 1.75 is not running well & will struggle. Others are novices & young girls yet to make their mark & Sonya Pollard.

Others are McLatchie, Chigwidden, Sassi, Hosking, Pollard.

Y Openshaw & Mattingly

Heat 9
Tough heat to pick as it should be dominated by the interstaters. Hard to line up the form. The Red Kendra Hubbard 1.75 won brilliantly in 2011 & is a big chance in this heat with White LJ Hilditch 6.50 & maybe the Lithgow finalists Blue Mandi Maritz 8.00 or the Yellow WA's Brittany Brymer 10.00 to be in a 4 way battle.

Others are Francis, N Henry, Coombe & Lane.

Don't know much about Maritz but her recent form has been very good & meets Brymer much better off.

LJ Hilditch is a tough pro runner in any heat & I reckon she might just hold out Brymer & Hubbard.

Maritz & LJ Hilditch

Heat 10
Final heat is another where it is tough to line up form from different states. The White Steph Mollica 6.25 was 2nd in 2012 & only 1m back. The Red Laura Whaler 1.25 will be storming home & might just grab 2nd from the Blue Melissa Howard 8.00.

Others are Devlin, Fisk, G Henry, Moran & Fry.

Mollica & Whaler.
