LAUNCESTON sprinter Laura Nicholson loves the Devonport Carnival.

"I just like performing there because the crowd is so close and it's under lights and there's a lot better atmosphere," she said.

Nicholson had a successful 2009 carnival series with five wins and was runner-up as the Tasmanian Athletic League female sprinter of the year.

She also finished second in last year's Burnie Gift.

But she was expecting a tougher carnivals campaign this time around having been pulled back one and a half metres over 120-metre gift distances this year.

"I was very surprised I did that well last year," she said.

"I don't have really high expectations this year because my mark has decreased since last year because of winning carnivals - but I will just try and go out there and do the best I can.

"I'm looking forward to it."

Nicholson will again concentrate on the 70m, 120m and 200m sprint distances during the carnivals.

"I feel like I'm running better than what I was this time last year but because of my handicap it's hard to compare - but time-wise I'm running better," she said.

She said she would love to one day win a Burnie Gift because of the status it holds.

"I think everyone wants to win Burnie because it's the most prestigious but I don't know if it will happen this year," she said.

"Hopefully I'll be able to aim for that in years to come."
