DAVID BAXTER FOUNDATION

ATTENTION ALL ATHLETES!!!

On the 2nd of July 2010 David Baxter passed away in Stockholm from a brain tumour. David's illness originated from a previous melanoma that spread to his brain. David was 34 years of age and had some spectacular achievements in the athletic world. David was one of Australia's premier sprinters for near a decade after first representing Australia at the World Junior Championships in 1996. With personal bests of 10.30 and 20.57 over the 100m and 200m David also had some spectacular success in the Victorian Athletic League. His first Gift win still as a junior was in the Caulfield Gift off 5m and he was a constant starter in the prestigious backmarkers handicap at Stawell. However, it was his achievements at Maryborough that will be forever remembered on the pro running scene.

1999 - MARYBOROUGH GIFT - 1st - DAVID BAXTER - 0.75m - 12.36
2002 - MARYBOROUGH GIFT - 1st - DAVID BAXTER - 2.50m - 12.30

Not only was David a 2 time winner of the Maryborough Gift but he also has the honour of being the tightest handicapped runner to win the historic race.

His achievements off the track were equally impressive and were nothing short of incredible; degrees in Science and Medicine at Melbourne University, Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery at Oxford, articles published in medical journals, researcher in Stockholm (Karolinska Institute and University Hospital) and Melbourne (Monash University); finally culminating with his acceptance into the Neurosurgical program at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

ON NEW YEARS DAY IN 2011 THE MARYBOROUGH GIFT COMMITTEE, VICTORIAN ATHLETIC LEAGUE AND THE DAVID BAXTER FOUNDATION WOULD LIKE TO HONOUR THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF DAVID BAXTER WITH A PRESENTATION TO HIS FAMILY. MEMBERS OF THE DAVID BAXTER FOUNDATION WILL BE PRESENT ON THE DAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE DAVID BAXTER FOUNDATION AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE DANGERS OF SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMAS. PLEASE ATHLETES HELP TO SUPPORT A WORTHY CAUSE ON THE DAY AND HELP TO REMEMBER ONE OF VICTORIA'S GREAT ATHLETES AND GREAT PEOPLE - EVERY LITTLE BIT WILL HELP THIS WONDERFUL CAUSE.

AS ATHLETES WE ARE EXPOSED TO THE SUN A LOT MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON AND WE OFTEN COMPETE IN SOME VERY CHALLENGING CONDITIONS. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ SOME OF THE FOLLOWING FACTS. AND PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS CAN AFFECT ANY OF US AT ANY TIME!!!!!!

* More than 1850 Australians, including 357 Victorians, die annually from skin cancer, more than the national and Victorian road toll (respectively).
• Skin cancer treatment in Australia costs around $300 million each year. It is the most expensive of all cancers.
• At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70.6
• In 2002, skin cancers accounted for over 80% of all cancers diagnosed in Australia.
• Melanoma incidence rates in Australia and New Zealand are between two and five times as high as those found in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.
• Australian adolescents have by far the highest incidence of melanoma in the world, compared with adolescents in other countries.
• Melanoma can develop early in life and the risk
increases as you get older. Melanoma is the most diagnosed cancer each year for people aged 15 to 44
• In Victoria, the highest rates of melanoma occur on the trunk in men and on the legs in women.

THE FOLLOWING IS SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE DAVID BAXTER FOUNDATION AND WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO DO:

Mission: The David Baxter Foundation has two functions;

-Firstly dedicated to providing grants for melanoma cancer research via the David Baxter Charitable Fund, a sub fund of the Melbourne Community Foundation;

- Secondly to support up and coming athletes by granting sports scholarships.

Company Overview:The David Baxter Foundation has been established to keep David's memory alive and to support causes David was passionate about. These include Melanoma Research and supporting up and coming athletes.
