Morehouse claims victory in first Warrnambool Gift since 2000

By JONO PECH
The Standard
Nov. 30, 2013

THE first Warrnambool Gift in 13 years has been won by Mount Waverley sprinter Carl Morehouse.

With a 100 metre time of 10.877, Morehouse was followed by runner up Cam Dunbar at 11.027 and Adam Coote in a close third-place.

The 29-year-old was pleased to defeat some tough competition, including reigning Stawell Gift champion Matthew Wiltshire, as well as multiple past finalists in the Stawell Gift.

"It was a little bit harder than the semis felt, but the wind was a little bit stronger," he told The Standard today.

"The VAL (Victorian Athletic League) circuit is what I train for these days.

"It was nice to actually get an opening run."

He said the return of the Warrnambool Gift was a plus for the circuit and was the first 100m straight event on the calendar.

"Some early success always helps the season get off to a good start.

"It's my first run for the season.

"There's not many out this way so doing a back-to-back with Terang is always nice.

"If you don't get up on the first day you can make amends on the second day.

"The best training is racing so being able to get a number of races in a weekend makes for a brilliant training session, a brilliant start to competition season."

Tomorrow Morehouse will take on many of today's competitors in the Terang Gift, with a little extra incentive as winners of both events take home a cash bonus.

"I'm not going to say no to that, it's certainly something to aim for," he said.

"I tried to run Terang a couple years ago and there used to be a Mount Gambier race on the same weekend but unfortunately I injured myself so it will be good to have a go on the track tomorrow.

"It's got a pretty good, solid reputation."
