Wow this will rattle a few cages......

Has the TAL sought permission from AA to conduct this?

I hope so because it would be a terrific event to run in Devonport.

I thought when the amateurs & pro's got together (in 1985) that part of the deal was that there would be no state or national pro titles off scratch unless permission was sought from AA. All state & national pro titles ceased around this time.

About 8 years ago I organised a 550m race off scratch for the West Adelaide meet. I ran it by ASA and they said they had no problem with it because it was over 550m - a distance they don't hold a state or national title for.

Might be worth the TAL exploring the agreement which both parties signed off on.

Personally I can't see why AA would knock it back. AA CEO Dallas O'Brien himself competed in state & (Brtish) national 400m pro titles.

It's great to see Devonport show some initiative and bring one back. The sport needs to find ways to present itself in a good light and the re-introduction of state and national professional title is a fantastic start.
Maryborough always had the Victorian 200m title, which was good to run in, so it would be nice to see some other clubs come on board and start to re-build the tradition.

Those invitation races continued in SA for a few years but because of the amount of prizemoney on offer and the 550m distance not really being part of the top line runners build up to bigger alternatives ,we lacked the support from the athletes for invitational fields.
Below is the last one ran in SA in 2008
As you can see only 4 runners, and 5 seconds separateing first from last.Wasnt good to watch to say the least.
So you can see why the SAAL canned the idea.

550m Invitation
HeatNum Placing Surname Given Name Handicap Time Prizemoney
F 1 Cook Hayden Scr 1:14.93 $125.00

F 2 Ferber Matthew Scr 1:16.22 $65.00

F 3 Killmier Robert Scr 1:18.10 $45.00

F 4 Nitschke Michael Scr 1:19.57 $30.00
