Macksville Park
Saturday 9 November 2013
12.30pm – 9.00pm

This year’s 60th BCU Macksville Gift Carnival has seen a big increase in entries with athletes entering from Victoria, ACT, Queensland and New South Wales. The $5,000 BCU Macksville Gift over the classic pro distance of 120 metres has attracted a field of 37 entries necessitating 6 heats on Saturday afternoon to be followed by 3 semi finals and a final of 7 runners on Saturday evening.

With a number of previous Gift winners entered it looks a fairly open race. However, the back-marker and last year’s rich Queanbeyan Gift winner from Randwick Dean Scarff looks a likely favourite. Scarff is a Collaroy beach sprinter and came 3rd last year in the World Beach Sprint Championship in Adelaide prior to taking out the $16,000 Queanbeyan Gift; he will definitely be worth watching. Two past winners of the Temora Golden Gift, Surry Hill’s Shaun Edwards and Narara’s Tom Paavola have both entered and if in reasonable shape should be good chances of causing an upset. Of the Queenslanders Ardyn Foy has previously run well at Macksville Park and it would not surprise to see him in the prizemoney this time while a good sprinkling of local runners headed by Nambucca Heads’ Sam Kete and Sawtell’s Riley Gray plus the evergreen Lenny Duroux should keep the visitors on their toes.

Young locals are plentiful in the other events on the program and it is good to see athletes such as Bowraville’s Alina Tape competing following her successful NSW All-Schools campaign; she will no doubt be looking for a good performance as a good prelude to her appearance at the Australian All-Schools Championships in Townsville early next month. Brother Beau is also running in a number of events on Saturday along with sisters Savannah and Mercedes Peterkin from Wirrimbi and Clybucca’s Kirstie Pedrola. It will also be interesting to see the coach of some of these athletes, Scotts Head’s Richie Donovan still running at his mature age; in his younger days Richie was a brilliant sprinter so it is good to see him still having a go.

Once again super-efficient Secretary of the Macksville Athletic Club Greg Wood has deservedly won the award for the 2012-2013 NSW Athletic League Administrator of the Year and will be presented with his trophy during Saturday’s carnival

With over 60 runners providing close to 200 entries in a variety of events in the professional program and a host of races for the younger athletes as well, Saturday afternoon at Macksville Park promises plenty of exciting racing, so it should attract plenty of spectator interest from the local community.
