Heazlewood first woman to win open final

FIONA Heazlewood became the first woman to win the 200m open final at the Rosebery Carnival on the weekend.

Heazlewood is hoping her victory will pave the way for more women to enter the event.

"Hopefully it gives other girls a bit more of an incentive to go down and compete," she said.

In what was an absolute cracker of a race, Heazlewood, off a mark of 46m, just crossed the line in front of Southerners Jarred Gilroy (16m) and Rowan Mason (17m), who both stormed home in the final stages.

Having barely won the first heat, it was a case of deja vu for Don runner Heazlewood, beating Gilroy home by just .28s with a time of 22.06s.

After losing a season a few years ago to a calf injury, Heazlewood was just keen to be out there competing.

"No, I had no expectations at all, I just need to get some running under my belt," Heazlewood said.

"I was just happy to be actually running."

The wet conditions made running more difficult and Heazlewood said it was something she chatted to her coach about before taking part.

Thankfully Heazlewood said she had pulled up well, except for some general soreness.

"That's probably more to do with running in the seven races than anything else," she said.

This looks like it will be the last year to see Heazlewood at the carnivals as she is considering hanging up her running shoes.
