Davina STRAUSS off 14m .425 better than the next quickest. Rest of the girls can go home now.

Hmmmm 14m is a fair start on rest of the field!

UPDATE: Stewards have reviewed Davina Strauss' handicap in the Women's Gift as a result of lack of info. She will run from 10m tomorrow.

A Davina Strauss ran 12.1 hand in 2001 over the 100m in the USA. if this is the same davina I don't think 10m will hold her back to much.
I hate the idea that some groups think that all professional athletes are cheats and the only way to be competitive is to provide limited information when running first up. People who think like this fail to acknowledge that majority of new runners provide correct information and have to move slowly to a competitive mark. This is part of the sport, it's like a new recruit running out in the first grade team in the AFL or NRL without having proven themselves in the reserves or local teams.

I appreciate your point, and I don't disagree, but I do wonder about the legitimacy of a hand-held time, in the first place, let alone one from 12 years ago, in another country, even if it is the same athlete.

There are people out there who can barely handle a stopwatch, let alone use it with any degree of accuracy or reliability. To base a handicap off hand times would be farcical. I've seen athletes who are regularly 12.5 electronic runners given low 10s times for a 100m - if we were to use these times for a handicap, they'd be running off scratch instead of 20m. That's ridiculous and makes a mockery of the system.

Obviously a mistake was made with regards to Davina Strauss, whether by accident or intention, but it has been corrected by the Stewards and Handicappers, and that's the way the system should work.

Is the novice mark 10? How does one get a mark like this on their first appearance? Or is she a member interstate?

Novice mark appears to be 7.0. Several new athletes on 7 in the womens gift.

This is a momumental stuff up. Not by Davina Strauss, but the handicapper. Under no circumstances was she entitled to a first time mark of 14. Handicapper should wear the error for being negligent.

VAL should fine the handicapper for not doing his job properly.

The novice mark is 6 or 9 depending if she is over 35 or not. Struass did enter the lithgow gift with a handicap of 10m in the women's gift and 15.5m for the 70m. However, lithgow gift was cancelled so effectively stawell becomes her first run. In terms of other novice athletes, how can you explain to 15-18 year old juniors, turn up support the meets, be patient and then watch another novice win a heat by 10m. I believe it is well overdue the time for a national handicapping panel and the creation of a performance register such as http://www.all-athletics.com/. The database would minimise some of the disputes and assist in fast tracking novice runners to competitive marks. A win win for all

Mollica misses out by .01 from making the final.
Can someone tell me why Bousted didnt progress through to the final when Austin from a different heat with the same time did.
Did the times go to a thousandth of a second which we dont see in the results.

Both very unlucky not to progress.

Matenga

Pamela Austin- 14.258
Cara Boustead- 14.260

2 thousandths of a second, very unlucky
